Processing Personal Pain — A Baha’i View

O God, my God! Lowly, suppliant and fallen upon my face, I beseech Thee with all the ardor of my invocation to pardon whosoever hath hurt me, forgive him that hath conspired against me and offended me, and wash away the misdeeds of them that have wrought injustice upon me. Vouchsafe unto them Thy goodly gifts, give them joy, relieve them from sorrow, grant them peace and prosperity, give them Thy bliss and pour upon them Thy bounty. Thou art the Powerful, the Gracious, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting!

This was Abdu’l-Baha’s prayer for God to forgive and bless people who had been incredibly malicious to him for many years. It is highly instructive for anyone who wishes to see how the Baha’i Scriptures urge one to process pain — in this case, pain caused by treachery.

We all experience pain — caused by loved ones who prove false; friends who hurt our feelings; disappointments with ourselves or with others; grief and longing. The natural tendency at such a time is to isolate ourselves, nurse our wounds, and numb the pain. In a letter to a Baha’i who had been libeled, Abdu’l-Baha urged him at such a time to increase his services in the Path of God, and to seek neither to be praised by others, nor to be upset by their blame:

“If one is praised and chosen by God, the accusation of all the creatures will cause no loss to him; and if the man is not accepted in the threshold of God, the praise and admiration of all men will be of no use to him. By all these it is meant that thou must not be sorry and grieved because of these things … written against thee; nay, rather trust in God and be unmoved by either the praise or the false accusations declared by people towards thee, depend entirely on God and exert thyself to serve His holy vineyard.”

Whatever its cause, pain, properly used, can be an incentive to spiritual growth. In his work “The Seven Valleys“, which describes the stages of the seeking soul in its quest for the knowledge of God, Baha’u'llah states, “if there be no pain, this journey will never end.”

In this same passage, Baha’u'llah quotes the Persian mystic poet Attar, whom I here paraphrase: Let the believer keep his faith; let the unbeliever keep his doubt. Attar’s heart seeks pain — even an atom of pain. Attar understood the preciousness of pain in the path of personal growth. This is also expressed in this prayer by Baha’u'llah, which will help to process one’s pain and soothe one’s soul:

“Glory to Thee, O my God! But for the tribulations which are sustained in Thy path, how could Thy true lovers be recognized; and were it not for the trials which are borne for love of Thee, how could the station of such as yearn for Thee be revealed? Thy might beareth me witness! The companions of all who adore Thee are the tears they shed, and the comforters of such as seek Thee are the groans they utter, and the food of them who haste to meet Thee is the fragments of their broken hearts.”

Pain, put to good use, is an incentive to change, a stimulus to draw us closer to God, and a means of purifying our motives. I have personally found that directly trying to reduce the pain is counterproductive. Rather, I embrace the pain, and work with it. I recall reading a Persian aphorism in a book many years ago: “If a moment burns — let it burn.” I have found this to be great advice. I ask myself what is causing the pain, and resolve to change within me whatever brought it about. Whether it is the pain of exposure of my own shortcomings, or pain caused by another, if I let it burn inside, and if I view it as burning away my ego, I find, without exception, that it does me no harm and causes me to grow. This is consistent with this guidance received from Shoghi Effendi:

” … suffering, although an inescapable reality, can nevertheless be utilised as a means for the attainment of happiness. This is the interpretation given to it by all the prophets and saints who, in the midst of severe tests and trials, felt happy and joyous and experienced what is best and holiest in life. Suffering is both a reminder and a guide. It stimulates us better to adapt ourselves to our environmental conditions, and thus leads the way to self improvement.”

In Marjory Morten’s description of Baha’u'llah’s daughter Bahiyyih Khanum, and her high state of spiritual attainment in dealing with pain, she writes:

“Something greater than forgiveness she had shown in meeting the cruelties and strictures in her own life. To be hurt and to forgive is saintly, but far beyond this is the power to comprehend and not be hurt.”

And,

” … if one tried to hurt her, she would wish to console him for his own cruelty.”

Sometimes the source of pain is much deeper than emotional pain, and expresses the state of a soul who has not found God. Baha’u'llah identifies this with the “Great Tribulation” anticipated by Christians. Referring to it as “oppression” in this passage from his “Book of Certitude,” in the course of his elucidation of the meaning of the signs of Christ’s return, Baha’u'llah writes:

What “oppression” is more grievous than that a soul seeking the truth, and wishing to attain unto the knowledge of God, should know not where to go for it and from whom to seek it?

The Word of God brought to earth in every age causes a tumult in the human soul. In one’s inner being and in the world at large, there is chaos before there is resolution and a higher order, as Baha’u'llah expresses in one of his meditations:

“I testify that no sooner had the First Word proceeded, through the potency of Thy will and purpose, out of His mouth, and the First Call gone forth from His lips than the whole creation was revolutionized, and all that are in the heavens and all that are on earth were stirred to the depths. Through that Word the realities of all created things were shaken, were divided, separated, scattered, combined and reunited, disclosing, in both the contingent world and the heavenly kingdom, entities of a new creation, and revealing, in the unseen realms, the signs and tokens of Thy unity and oneness. Through that Call Thou didst announce unto all Thy servants the advent of Thy most great Revelation and the appearance of Thy most perfect Cause.”

Suffering is an inevitable part of living. By identifying the source of our pain, making the necessary adjustments in our life, and striving to use it as an incentive to rendering greater service, pain can be seen as one more of the God-given tools we can use to draw closer to Him. As Shoghi Effendi’s guidance says:

“It is part of the Preciousness of this great work being done in the teaching field that it should be done through real sacrifices and not without heartaches attending it. There is a tendency in the American outlook on life at present to believe that suffering is produced by clumsiness and is not only avoidable but not a good thing, and not essential. While there is some truth in this attitude, we as Baha’is cannot but believe that suffering is often an essential part of our service. The Prophets suffered bitterly, so did all the Saints and Martyrs, and often ‘fed on the fragments of those broken hearts’, as Baha’u'llah says in one of His beautiful prayers.”

The bond that unites hearts most perfectly is loyalty. True lovers once united must show forth the utmost faithfulness one to another. You must dedicate your knowledge, your talents, your fortunes, your titles, your bodies and your spirits to God, to Bahá’u'lláh and to each other. Let your hearts be spacious, as spacious as the universe of God!

Allow no trace of jealousy to creep between you, for jealousy, like unto poison, vitiates the very essence of love. Let not the ephemeral incidents and accidents of this changeful life cause a rift between you. When differences present themselves, take counsel together in secret, lest others magnify a speck into a mountain. Harbour not in your hearts any grievance, but rather explain its nature to each other with such frankness and understanding that it will disappear, leaving no remembrance. Choose fellowship and amity and turn away from jealousy and hypocrisy.

Your thoughts must be lofty, your ideals luminous, your minds spiritual, so that your souls may become a dawning-place for the Sun of Reality. Let your hearts be like unto two pure mirrors reflecting the stars of the heaven of love and beauty.

Together make mention of noble aspirations and heavenly concepts. Let there be no secrets one from another. Make your home a haven of rest and peace. Be hospitable, and let the doors of your house be open to the faces of friends and strangers. Welcome every guest with radiant grace and let each feel that it is his own home.

No mortal can conceive the union and harmony which God has designed for man and wife. Nourish continually the tree of your union with love and affection, so that it will remain ever green and verdant throughout all seasons and bring forth luscious fruits for the healing of the nations.

O beloved of God, may your home be a vision of the paradise of Abha, so that whosoever enters there may feel the essence of purity and harmony, and cry out from the heart: Here is the home of love! Here is the palace of love! Here is the nest of love! Here is the garden of love!

Be like two sweet-singing birds perched upon the highest branches of the tree of life, filling the air with songs of love and rapture.

Lay the foundation of your affection in the very center of your spiritual being, at the very heart of your consciousness, and let it not be shaken by adverse winds.

And, when God gives you sweet and lovely children, consecrate yourselves to their instruction and guidance, so that they may become imperishable flowers of the divine rose-garden, nightingales of the ideal paradise, servants of the world of humanity, and the fruit of the tree of your life.

Live in such harmony that others may take your lives for an example and may say one to another: Look how they live like two doves in one nest, in perfect love, affinity and union. It is as though God had kneaded the very essence of their beings for the love of one another.

Attain the ideal love that God has destined for you, so that you may become partakers of eternal life forthwith. Quaff deeply from the fountain of truth, and dwell all the days of your life in the paradise of glory, gathering immortal flowers from the garden of divine mysteries.

Be to each other as heavenly lovers and divine beloved ones dwelling in a paradise of love. Build your nest on the leafy branches of the tree of love. Sail upon the shoreless sea of love. Walk in the eternal rose-garden of love. Bathe in the shining rays of the sun of love. Be firm and steadfast in the path of love. Perfume your nostrils with the fragrances from the flowers of love. Attune your ears to the soul-entrancing melodies of love. Let your aims be as generous as the banquets of love, and your words as a string of white pearls from the ocean of love. Drink deeply of the elixir of love, so that you may live continually in the reality of Divine Love.

跑步回来，看着屁股发光的同事绝尘而去，转身带着汗水登上简易楼梯，开始了自我叽喳。离上次运动足足有一个星期，这期间是如何过来的以不可考究，记忆的碎片散落在这边的雨季中，随着不同颜色的渠水流向了大海。尝试着弯腰捧起一掌的水来仔细观摩，却发现水滴不停的漏下，仍旧如初。在刘晓波被关押的情况下，在韩朝兄弟要开始相煎的气氛中，以及GDP的过时里，发行自己还能够去跑步有BBC的陪伴真好。今天跟一个伯伯擦肩而过，这几天他在为星期六的马拉松准备，一天一个小时的热身运动，连续参加这个马拉松已经好几年。但这位伯伯仍然显得有点腼腆，而我看在他年纪的份上只有咂舌。

H哥的新二手摩托车爆缸，估计他宁愿被爆菊花也不愿意相信那车子爆缸。由此引发的一连串效应让他无语问苍天，由此看了好几集的爱，只是为了在片尾曲那里找到一点点安慰。屋漏偏逢连夜雨，忘记带来笔记本的电源线，只好与05后为伍，享受几年前的时光，时不时来这里抱怨，多按几下它就不爽，快要宕机的样子。俺等会还要自力更生申请个东东。顺便鄙视一下某种人。虽然都是混饭吃，也是应该有点操守，应该有点原则，我怎么就看走眼了。遂决定将其拖进黑名单，钦此。另外要大力赞扬一下缅甸同胞，能够安居乐业，能随遇而安，堪以范仲淹为模范。这种随处绽放笑容的精神并不随着昂山素季的释放而有所改变。

公交站台后面的树给砍了一片，换之以草坪，不知要动什么工程。少了那么一点树荫，有点诧异。

据说阿公对过年很期待，还时不时跟弟弟飚两句英文。阿婆的肩胛酸痛亦有好转，甚好。另外海峡时报刊登了关于本地宗教“如何与帮会成员”争夺青少年的努力，欣喜的看到熟悉的朋友出现在版面的上方。由国家灵体会秘书提供：

祂的生日 – Nov 12, 2010

跑步回来，动身之前腿部胸肌酸痛，回巢之后请参考之前的状态。感觉好了许多，有点担心中了跑步的毒，不去跑跑会浑身不舒服，本来就不灵活的脑袋更加愚钝。BBC仍旧在说我听不懂的内容，似乎还没有提到亚运会开幕的内容，据说很多烟花，很多笑脸。搞不清楚惠民政策为什么要弄个坐公车免费的活动，然后搞不明白为什么有那么多人去挤免费的公车，难道提前探亲去了？海地的疫情越来越严重，地震过后的重建工作没有资金的支持举步维艰。据说缅甸的昂山素姬要从软禁(house arrest)中被放出来了，支持者正在居所周围热烈期待着。中国的同胞也在期待着，既然她都有可能被放出来的一天，那么国内相同处境的牛人出来放开蹄子撒野的日子也不久了，除非已经不再是共产啦。还有个历史节目是关于波斯王国的，下面就要说说那片土地出来的圣人。

这个圣人就是巴哈欧拉，今天也是祂的诞辰。昨晚麦波申地区分会在一个safra里面举行简单的庆祝仪式，祈祷仪式过后，是一个视频短片，拍的很有水准。视频采用了当下流行的局部表现手法，几个巴哈伊朋友讲述了对巴哈欧拉的感受。然后的过程有点流于形式，算不上是节目的节目还没有结束，很多朋友就离席了。见到了许多朋友，但却没有上前深入交谈。有点脑袋发晕，是在这种场合下的经典反应。还是处于壳内的初级水平。谢谢M的邀请，谢谢KL的出席，谢谢各位朋友的安排和表演的节目，谢谢新加坡，谢谢SMRT和SBS，谢谢Pentax。

跑步回来，中断了几天，状态回到之前的水平，但很快衔接上来，请继续。途中听到BBC播出一个教授的关于弦论的讲座，之前曾看过相关的解释，却忘得一干二净，可能人的差别在于此。弦论这个词的由来表述了该理论的特征，想象当你拨动吉他的弦时，它会按照一定的频率振动。而弦论就是讲述这个频率，大概意思是粒子以自由的频率振动。弦论的出现将世界的维度扩展到11维，关于维度这个东西，我至今不甚了解，看着4维的东东就已经头晕了。希望有人能够用神话的描述来解释这种超维度的理论。现在有很多研究生和教授在研究弦论，以至于其它粒子理论显得式微。该教授的解释是各自自由选择，符合自己研究水平和兴趣的就好。教授说他从来都不相信这个弦论是否真的存在，弦论只不过刚刚好弥补了之前量子力学的缺陷，就像你突然拿到那只萝卜刚刚好塞进了那个坑，不多也不少，但却不知道那个萝卜是怎么来的，同样那个坑是否一直存在也是未知数；比男女配对复杂多了。对弦论感兴趣的可以移步去李淼老师的博客顺藤摸瓜，说不定很快你就找到了属于你的那个坑。

另外也得知赵连海被判刑两年半，他的律师说这种类型的因言获罪最多判刑几个月。悲呼。

晚饭之前得知H哥对丘书记的劝告，苦口婆心的建议他能够进行一定程度的升级，不至于被时代的车轮抛到印子里面。我听了后，浑身颤抖，获得了高潮般的痛苦，过了一阵子，就将那种心有戚戚焉的感觉忘得一干二净。只有关心你的朋友才会说出这样的建议，丘书记如能放下身段从谏如流，善矣。我知道用了“忘得一干二净”两次，不对，已经三次了。

贴出STC姐姐分享的一篇马来西亚学习中心的报道。在资讯爆炸的时代，善于利用媒体传播信息已经是刻不容缓的目标。要让更多人参与过来，就得定点精确跟大平面相结合投放到适合的受众。明晚是巴哈欧拉诞辰晚会，将会见到许多久未见面的朋友。

林顺钦建立的文明教育研习中心，为儿童、青少年提供灵性和美德教育课程。

该去报到了。然后洗澡睡觉。猪一样。

跑步回来，下着毛毛细雨夹杂着细细毛雨，只好在楼梯上上下下完成相同的运动量。刚刚在面书上看到朋友分享的一个在youtube上的生小孩过程，日本人拍的，哇哦，果然女人最痛，不简单呀。可以看到这个星期有密集的锻炼身体，可是早晨的节目没有坚持，仍然是一顿饱一顿饥。

阿公的情况有恶化的迹象，坚持住啊。

有东西卡在脑部和手指之间，因此放些Telok Blangah Hill Park照片应景儿。周五乘着Deepavali放假去这林中走廊感受一番，对迟到的事情深感内疚；闷热的天气阻碍不了不错的过程。后来在怡丰城找座位进餐时有点鸡肋，感觉上应该不用去人多的地方，站在别人旁边或者被别人站在旁边都有压力感。当有压力的时候，什么都会变味的，压力锅除外。

看着自己在twitter上的只言片语，很多是一些映射、比喻、引用后的产物，记录了一些认为值得记录的事情。需要一套编译系统来进行还原。问题是，这种防止忘记的方法如果遇到忘记了编译方法改怎么办。跟T姑姑吵了一顿，还没复原呢。

周六的时间过得特别快。第一次坐几乎开通了一半的地铁中央环线，在巴耶利巴(Paya Lebar)和实龙岗(Serangoon)转换两次后才到达目的地，时间相对于以前得在欧南园(Outram Park)或者市政府(City Hall)再到多美歌(Dhoby Ghaut)转换较为缩短。中央环线只有五节车厢，在转换站处需要走上一段路程才能乘坐另一路线地铁，类似于多美歌站东北线和南北线之间的距离，同样的不需要重复刷卡。指示牌很明显和简单明了，完全不至于在转换时迷失方向。

谢谢Fo.的捧场，第二部手机选用Blackberry 9000。通过同事K的帮忙下，以类似淘宝价拿下这个Singtel的保修行货机。一起把玩了两个小时，有些设置已经生疏，相对于我的水货加山寨版8320体积大上许多。总的感觉是换型号的时间到了。其中一个设置在回来的地铁上才弄明白，在Phone Option中将“Dial From Key Board”的功能关闭则可以用键盘快捷调出大部分的应用程序，比如信息箱、日程、锁键盘等等。当然得在英语界面下才有这种快捷方案。

据说圣淘沙的赌场开了以后，岛内各地的夜市生意减了不少。另外也有传闻说午夜过后，赌场的客人许多都是下班后的厨师。L间接证实了这一点，他已经在那边扔了6千多。我本来打算叫他一起去见识见识，谁知道他竟先东南飞。幸亏的是没有沉迷进去，而且知道有可能将我诱惑也就从没有遵守曾经的约定。

这两个月，人事变动的很厉害。愿各自找到最合适自己的位置，一帆风顺，能在新的环境下更上一层楼。希望背后的故事也能够一笑而忘，虽然最后可能是相忘于江湖。镜子真的是很好的一个比喻。

与其将被摄主体放在正中央，还不如将他放置在一旁，将有意思的背景作为陪衬。

这种做法在有同一个主题的背景中会显现特别的效果。举个例子，当你要拍摄一个小孩打开圣诞礼物的时刻，那么将小孩跟圣诞树和未拆开的礼物都摄入照片中。

有一些基本的技巧教你如何摆放主体在照片中的位置。

三等分规则

拍摄方法中有个很流行的技巧就是“三等分”。这是一个很简单的技巧能够使你的照片灵动起来。将你的照片按三等分划分长宽线，拍摄构图时，将你的主体放置在这些线上或者交叉处，就是不能放在正中央。

比如，将主体的眼睛放在最高的那条线上，又或者将主体放置在这两条线的交点处。

这是一个很容易就能够做得到的技巧使得照片看起来很有平衡感。也能够避免拍出一张空洞的背景和细小的主体反差极大的照片，因为你需要根据照片的边缘来选定适当的位置。

尽管如此，硬币也是有两面的。虽然遵循三等分规则是一条放之天下皆准的方法，但突破规则也是一条准则。

Digital Photography Secret 03 — Place your subject off-center

Rather than placing your main subject in the middle of the screen, place it to one side and ensure something interesting is in the background that fills the remainder of the image.

This can be especially effective if the background has the same theme. For example, if photographing a child opening a Christmas present, frame them to one side and have the Christmas Tree with unopened presents filling the rest of the image.

There are a few guidelines that can help you place your subject in the frame.

The Rule of Thirds

One of the most popular rules in photography is the “Rule of Thirds”. It is a simple rule that can add dynamism to your photos. Simply, divide the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. When composing your shot, place important elements either along these lines, or where the lines intersect – NOT at the centre of the frame.

For example, place a subject’s eyes where the top line is, or place your subject on the place in the image where two of these lines intersect.

It’s a very simple rule to follow and will result in a nicely balanced, easy on the eye picture. It also helps get rid of the ‘tiny subject and large amount of space’ tendency because you need to position items relative to the edges of the frame.

Having said this, the Rule of Thirds is also one of the rules you’ll want to break often! This is fine – the Rule of Thirds is more of a guideline and sometimes you will find a better image when you break the rule.

这些可以说是所有《三国》读者的共同心声，照理会读得大快人心，读得赏心悦目，读得为之雀跃。但事实是，我期待了那么久的书，却几乎读不下去。太圆满了！解气是解了，却陷入了空虚之中。正如叔本华说的，人生因为无法满足愿望而痛苦，一旦获得了满足，同时也就消除了他的愿望，可怕的空虚和无聊就会袭来。“人生是在痛苦和无聊之间像钟摆一样回来摆动着。”在我看来，痛苦是沉重的，却有一种悲壮的感觉，如古希腊人说的，悲剧有一种净化心灵的作用，读《三国演义》就有这种作用，我可以一遍又一遍地读；而空虚的感觉，如米兰·昆德拉所言，是难以承受的轻，这也是《反三国演义》让我读不下去的原因。

牛郎织女原是天上的两颗星，大约在汉代开始变成了神。《古诗十九首》中有这样一首：“迢迢牵牛星，皎皎河汉女，纤纤擢素手，札札弄机杼。终日不成章，泣涕零如雨。河汉清且浅，相去复几许。盈盈一水间，脉脉不得语。”到了南北朝，又增添了故事情节，南朝殷芸《小说》中说：“天河之东有织女，天帝之子也。年年机杼劳役，织成云锦天衣，容整不暇整。帝怜其独处，许嫁河西牵牛郎，嫁后逐废织纴。天帝怒，责令归河东，但使一年一度相会。”以后故事不断被添油加醋，而成为民间传说中经典爱情故事。

关于豆腐，《归田琐记》还记了一段故事，说豆腐制作时，用豆、水、杂料等合重若干，等做成豆腐后，份量会超过原先的含量，朱熹因为格不出其中的理，所以终生不吃豆腐。

拖了好几天，断断续续先抄上这几段，怎样才能提供识字能力？打出其中的有些字让人火冒三丈，深深怀疑以前的语文课是不是睡过来的。这两天上火，无名火？是食物的关系。在K的帮忙下，在淘宝上订购了许多零零碎碎的东西，到时候会挂满东西回来。手痒，又进了一个Pentax SMC A 70-210mm f4 macro手动头。这次是从LX手中拿过来的，二百块。他所有卖东西的帖子都疑似有“Selling coz my dry cabinet is overcrowded”这么一句话，见面的时候就问他的干燥箱是多大，为什么老是满的？他在NTU读博士，将他的家乡武汉跟GF的成都搞混掉了。那么这次的理由是因为周六要去看飞行展，所以要用到一个长变焦的镜头。周日开始上了一堂日文课，Motegi老师的英文不是那么铃铛，就当作是泡在日语中吧，进度太快了，要花很多时间，这个本来也是要花时间的。周六时，在ZH家的聚会成了一个关于祈祷练习会，包括了如何祈祷，如何定下目标等一篮子改进目标。也是早到了要反思的时间啦。嗯，其中关于一些个人感观，至少没有上次在听演讲时那么反感，究竟是感情蒙蔽了思维还是别的，不敢深思。其中有些类似的关于TCH跟我提到的“万有引力定律”相似，夜深了，先闲置不议。

不满足于在后台除了删垃圾留言就没有做别的事情，在此唠叨两句，充充门面，扩充一下日志数量，努力为百分之八的GDP增长率年终目标做贡献。

上上个周末，应CHM邀请，去位于牛车水夜市的她先生字画档口参观暨英语角小聚。在那档口与J和C盘缠了许久，看来往的游客，看字画的制作，也不亦乐乎。由于年前充裕时间不多，只能寄望于来年开春英语角可以上一个台阶。有什么值得记录的事情还是马上变成比特比较好，要不就很多个上字了。晚上话痨之后，在水一方有个乐队在演出，从那以后就提醒自己带着相机的时候一定要带个备用电池。需要提一下的是，花了好一阵子才找到这个主唱的个人网站，因为当时他用新加坡口音说出的地址以及当地人奇怪的姓名发音组合。比较喜欢他翻唱的Jackson的Man in the Mirror。经过esplanade地下时，过道上有一个名叫Last Meals的展览，将美国死刑犯的头像和他们吃的最后一餐组合在一块：

Every prisoner waiting to be executed is granted a last meal. Prisoners waiting to die choose their last meal for different reason. Some choose from past memories, while others feast on what they crave at the moment. Such fascinating details put to death are a matter of public record and are the inspiration of this series of photographs. Justice may not always be served because the innocent can be proved guilty and the guilty can be proved innocent. Choosing the last meal is a significant ritual because the accuracy and validity of this choice is the only answer one can ultimately accept. This series visually documents the face and last meal of a convicted killer and is without question, honest and true. This will be an on going project as executions continue to take place in the United States. The core of the issue lies not on the emotionally loaded (for or against) arguments, but to question, how is society really served by the death penalty?

标题是听GF大哥的一个评价而得，周日经由他和DY的信息跑到联邦地铁站旁的卫理公会教堂听了后后半段的讲座，演讲者是一个旅居在美国的跟六四事件有点关系的人物，没有搞清当初他是处于什么角色，看起来当时他应该是快奔三的人了。内容没有什么印象，无非是要信上帝，至于为什么要信上帝呢是因为你必须得信上帝，因为人是渺小的，而这个渺小是用宇宙的大来比喻的。对于一个在无神论教育系统中成长的人来说，这样的话跟没说没两样，尽管防止大家在那伤神，要加上一句思考是没有用，把上帝想清楚了是不可能的。以至于最后被得到那个演讲厅里面鱼龙混杂的评语。GF曰：要参加活动不是不可以，最好还是以一个组织者的身份参加，这样无论对那个方面的提高都有很大帮助。

也是同一天，这也可以说是在新加坡的历史上可以浓妆淡抹的一天，因为两个来自临江镇的人终于见面了！重要性不亚于井冈山会师。LXT大哥哥在此三年，也就是说两年的时间里彼此相隔如此之近却像天边一样远，痛哉。转辗取得联系，幸哉。两位对各自的生活和计划小小讨论则个，主要是爽了把临江话的瘾。抱歉让Richard赶来小聚，由于英语水平关系也只能点到为止。

兰州农业大学放假，Mel上个星期回来要呆到3月初。如往常一样，小聚一下。耳中的兰州很陌生，家乡也如此。

网游生涯只到大话西游为止，还是第一版，现在应该还有同学在玩吧。自己的名字已经忘了，而两个宠物的名字则是柏拉图和亚里士多德。下面这个《网瘾战争》中的桥段看起来都很陌生，但还是很好玩，除了长了点：

周瑛琦：欢迎收看筑梦天下。我是周瑛琦。相传两千六百多年前，新的巴比伦国王尼布甲尼撒二世迎娶了美丽的米底公主，公主却患了思乡病，国王为博红颜一笑，模仿公主的山地家乡重金打造了一座美轮美奂的阶梯花园，满布奇花异草，还有非常完备的灌溉系统，令人叹为观止。这就是举世闻名的古代世界七大奇迹之一：巴比伦空中花园。可惜的是，这座花园只存在于历史尘埃之中。我们今天要讲的建筑，被称作新的空中花园，同样的美轮美奂；它是一个年轻宗教的圣地，宗教和建筑的历史都不长，但却已经被联合国教科文组织列入了世界遗产名录。接下来，就让我们走近它，并从中找寻它和它代表的信仰的故事。

解说：海法，地中海东岸美丽的山城，以色列第三大城市，基督教、伊斯兰教、犹太教，以及其他大大小小的宗教派系在这里林立共生，阿拉伯人和犹太人在这里和睦相处，它是战火纷飞的中东土地上难得的和平家园。每年都有大量的游客涌入这座城市，而他们中的大多数，都冲着同一座建筑而来：巴哈伊阶梯花园。

解说：花园依山而建，背靠有“上帝之山”盛名的卡梅尔山麓，迎向地中海吹来的潮湿海风。以金色穹顶的主建筑为中心发散，形成19级巨大的平台式阶梯，自山脚至山顶绵延千米。所有的建筑细节，都浸透了一个年轻宗教的故事，花园是这个宗教的圣地，也是一处先人的陵寝。宗教的名字，就叫巴哈伊。

解说：1844年，一位年轻的伊朗人赛义德·阿里·穆罕默德宣称，自己是先知巴孛，他告诉伊斯兰教什叶派信仰中的人们，上帝的信使即将到来。在巴孛的语意中，上帝的信使曾经在历史上多次出现，他们包括过去的摩西、穆罕默德和耶稣，而这次即将降临的信使，将引领世间走向大同。

解说：然而巴孛及其追随者被视作异端，受到了迫害。最终，而立之年的巴孛被处死。他的遗骨在长达60年的时间里被追随者辗转隐藏在不同的地方，以防落入敌对势力之手。

周瑛琦：巴孛殉教后不久，在德黑兰的一所监狱中，他的一名追随者迎来了一次新生。年轻的伊朗贵族米扎尔·侯赛因·阿里宣称：他在地牢里受到了上帝的启示，就像当年摩西面对燃烧的荆棘丛，释迦牟尼在菩提树下顿悟，圣灵以白鸽之形降临于基督那样，他也感受到了“天启”，自己就是巴孛所说的最后一位信使，并获得了“巴哈欧拉”的称号，意思是“上帝的荣耀”。就这样，巴哈伊教在监狱中成立了。它信奉唯一不灭的神，接纳世界上主要宗教的有效性，认为耶稣、穆罕默德、摩西和佛陀都是“神的显示者”，而人类原本是一家，世界必将最终走向大同等等。巴哈欧拉还向一些主要国家的元首和教皇庇护九世等宗教领袖寄发了他的号召：尽快地统一起来，为建立一个共同的信仰和持久的世界和平而努力。但他的路，可想而知并不平坦。

解说：逶迤35公里的卡梅尔山横亘于海法市中心，被犹太教、天主教和巴哈伊教视为圣山。根据圣经记载，大约3000年前，先知义赛亚和以利亚曾先后在这里居住。所有叙利亚和以色列历史上的战役，都刻意避开了这座圣山，每次战役往返都从山的两侧绕道而过。在希伯莱语中“卡梅尔”的意思是“上帝的绿洲”。然而这座传说中的绿洲在现实世界里却几乎寸草不生。

解说：1891年，流亡的巴哈欧拉辗转经过海法，亲自为殉教先知巴孛选定了长眠之地–卡梅尔山。但直到巴哈欧拉去世后，他的儿子，任教长的阿博都·巴哈才着手在父亲指定的地点修建巴孛陵寝。尸骨辗转多时巴孛，终于迎来了安息之日。然而这座陵寝的修筑，并不顺利。

解说：直到1921年，阿博都·巴哈去世后，他的孙子守基·阿芬第才完成了巴孛陵寝的修筑工程。

解说：它是加拿大建筑师威廉姆·麦克斯韦尔的作品，他完美的将东西方风格杂糅在一起，精妙的体现了巴哈伊教这一新兴宗教的简约、明晰和包容。

解说：与此同时，圣护守基·阿芬第还做出了修建梯田花园的规划，并亲自丈量了各层梯田的位置，可惜直到他1957年逝世，这个规划都并能得以实现。这时的巴哈伊花园，还只是一座单体的陵寝建筑。而此时，距离它修建初始，已过去将近70年。

解说：先知的陵寝，何日变为新的“空中花园”？

周瑛琦：上一章我们讲到，巴哈欧拉按照先知巴孛的预言创立了巴哈伊教，并在海法的卡梅尔山指定了先知巴孛的陵寝修筑地点。所以今天的巴哈伊花园，起初的规划只是一个陵墓。巴哈欧拉后来继续推行他世界大同的教旨，但迎接他的是无尽的驱逐，从波斯到奥斯曼帝国的巴格达、伊斯坦布尔、亚德里亚堡，还避世隐居于苏雷曼尼叶山区达数年之久。然而随着时间流逝，不管他在一个位子影响了大家，还是避世隐居，他的影响力一直都在与日俱增，信徒陆续增加，并紧密地团结在了一起。巴哈欧拉再次给包括苏丹在内的几位统治者写信，宣称自己是神的先知，并再次宣扬他的世界大同说法。结果，巴哈欧拉被放逐到今日以色列境内的阿卡，长达24年之久，并最终客死于此。而此时，巴哈伊花园项目才刚刚开始动工。

解说：1987年，巴哈伊世界中心任命加拿大籍建筑师法理博·萨巴，在巴孛陵寝的基础上，主持设计和建设梯田花园。目标是以巴孛陵寝为中心，建设起多层花园，为陵寝创造一个最恰当的外围环境。

解说：萨巴曾经设计过伊朗驻华大使馆，以及巴哈伊教另一座闻名遐迩的建筑–印度新德里巴哈伊灵曦堂，这座莲花形的灵曦堂在竣工后获得了国际建筑界的广泛赞誉。对于巴哈伊教义的理解和把握让萨巴在阶梯花园的设计上驾轻就熟。

解说：但是，要在遍地石头、地势陡峭的卡梅尔山半山建起一座美丽的花园，对于建筑师和他的团队来说仍然是一个非常大的挑战，况且这里的土壤都呈高碱性，对植物的选择受到了很大的限制，要想表现经典波斯花园的苍翠欲滴，简直是不可能完成的任务。

解说：项目早期就建立了实验苗圃，除了对色彩的要求外，耐碱抗旱也是主要的标准。另外，设计中还必须注意水资源的保存和利用。最值得一提的是工程的灌溉系统。

周瑛琦：在《圣经》中，以色列是上帝的应许之地，是“流着奶与蜜之地”。而位于地中海边的这个国家，却有大片国土处于干旱或者半干旱的沙漠地带，由于水资源的严重匮乏，而不得不对每一条溪流、每一处清泉、每一口井进行慎重、细致的勘测、导向和利用。在这片饥渴的土地上，水成为一把通往圣殿的金钥匙，简直比石油还要珍贵。所以，自古以来，以色列人对于有限的水资源的充分利用可谓登峰造极，灌溉技术一直处于世界先锋的地位，在巴哈伊阶梯花园的建设过程中，建筑师萨巴充分利用了这一优势，做了大量的功课，咨询了有关部门的专家，包括从业人员和大学教授。在他们的共同努力下，采用了非常专业的新式灌溉技术，梯田花园初具规模。

解说：围绕巴孛陵寝，上下各有九级梯田平台花园，设计为九个同心圆，象征着最初追随巴孛并为之献身的 18位门徒。所有的直线和弧线都将人们的目光引向中心的建筑，主要的的通道位于花园的中心，由台阶将各层平台串联起来。从山顶到山脚都能连续不断的步行而过，在花园与街区交叉的地方还修建了宽阔的石桥或地下通道，直接面朝海法港。

解说：花园满布各色花卉，为优化水的有效利用率，建筑师按不同植物对水的需求量的差异安装了不同等级的灌溉系统。作为花园灌溉的新策略之一，减压防回流设备被用于防止水的混流，同时也促进了水资源的重复利用，甚至还可以选择是否在灌溉水中添加肥料。

解说：当地人把巴孛陵寝称为金色穹顶，把陵寝周围的花园称为“旧花园”或“波斯花园”，将新建的18级平台花园称为“新花园”或“悬空花园”。巴哈伊信徒们相信：这里是人类最美好的栖居地。他们的大同梦想，能否通过这个栖居的花园，传向世界各处？

周瑛琦：在巴哈伊花园大兴土木修建的同时，巴哈伊教也在成长。它最初只局限于波斯和奥斯曼帝国，巴哈欧拉去世后，追随者扩散到亚洲和非洲的十三个国家。在巴哈欧拉幼子阿博都·巴哈的领导下，巴哈伊教开始在欧洲和美洲立足，并在伊朗得到巩固，尽管仍受迫害。据统计，这个仅有一百年多年历史的宗教已经成为全球成长最快速的独立性宗教之一，它已经遍及200多个国家，拥有 600万以上的教众。香港有一位歌手方大同就出生在夏威夷的一个巴哈伊信仰家庭。他的名字“大同”是他祖父给取的，正是来源于巴哈伊教义中有关世界大同的梦想。在巴哈伊教刚刚传到中国来的时候，翻译者认为它的教义与中国儒教的天下大同的思想不谋而合，所以一开始，巴哈伊教被译为大同教。2001年，巴哈伊信徒们心中的大同圣地终于落成。

解说：2001年5月22日黄昏，大约四千五百位观众，其中包括三千三百巴哈伊信徒群集在Haifa的卡梅尔山脚下，见证了这一耗资两亿五千万美元，前后历时达一百多年的建筑工程–巴哈伊花园的落成大典。

解说：这一工程将“上帝之山”卡梅尔山这样的不毛之地，变成了一座凌空屹立、美丽庄严的盛装花园，被誉为巴比伦空中花园的完美再现。这座阶梯式的花园，让喧闹的海港城心脏区，出现了一块宁静的沙漠绿洲。

解说：整座花园从山顶到山脚绵延近一公里，垂直高度达225米，最大坡度超过60度。远远望去，就像是一座凌空而建的花园。巴哈伊阶梯花园沿袭了经典波斯花园的设计准则：苍翠、简洁、细致和对称，同时也吸收了古典欧洲花园一年四季花开不败的传统。

解说：法理博·萨巴对色彩的设计和考虑非常独到：园内多年生植物按照设计精心挑选和分布以产生季节性色彩。

解说：每一层平台都设计有许多精美的装饰设计点缀着花园，与中心的巴孛陵寝花园相比，阶梯花园的设计更鲜活生动，也融合进了更多西方和地中海地区的风格因素。花园静静的眺望着蔚蓝地中海，每日免费迎送世界各地的访客。

周瑛琦：巴孛陵寝是巴哈伊教创始人巴哈欧拉指定修建，巴哈欧拉的幼子阿博都·巴哈将它规划为巴哈伊花园，并最终由巴哈的孙子阿芬第将这座园林修建落成。历经四代人共100多年，横跨3个世纪。在阿芬第1957年去世之后，巴哈伊教没有指定继承人。巴哈伊的领导层由个人转化为选举和任命产生的管理系统，年满21岁的信徒就享有被选举权；男女信徒有同等权力出任所有的职位。在今天的巴哈伊花园外围，就分布有巴哈伊教的一些管理职能性建筑。

解说：而在以色列以外，巴哈伊教设立有各色各样的灵曦堂。由于巴哈伊教对各种经典宗教均不排斥，在分布于各大洲的灵曦堂里，信仰任何宗教的人都可以自由的祈祷，诵经。或许正是由于这种包容性和现代性，使得巴哈伊教在世界范围内得到了迅猛的发展。

解说：2008年联合国教科文组织将以色列的巴哈伊圣地收入《世界遗产名录》，除了海法的巴哈伊花园外，它还包括位于阿卡附近的巴哈欧拉神庙。世界遗产委员会评价它不仅具有普世的精神价值，在建筑风格和设计上也具有独特的文化价值。

解说：这种包容的价值观在巴哈伊阶梯花园中也得到了体现。花园自中心向两侧逐步地由规则对称变为自然状态。花园的边界地区特意保留了大片的自然树丛和其它植物。设计师将这些自然野生的植被视作花园的一个组成部分，既可以成为当地野生动物的保留地，同时也是花园与周围民居和喧闹的城市间的一个缓冲区。

解说：作为巴哈伊圣地的阶梯花园，并不像过去古老的宗教建筑一样，沉浸在庄严肃穆的孤傲和冷漠当中，它更像是一座自己家的后花园，亲切而活泼，充满灵性。

解说：当市井的喧嚣为喷泉的潺潺水声所掩盖，在生机盎然的花朵簇拥之下，人们常常在花园中流连忘返，根本没有觉察，自己正行走于先人安息之所，反而像是身处天堂坠入尘世的一个角落。

周瑛琦：巴哈伊教认为，人死之后，灵魂就进入下一个世界，人在生前物质世界的灵性发展决定了他在灵魂世界的进度。所以巴哈伊提倡抛弃偏见，回归人的本性，人类原本是一家。是不是又有一点中国道家天人合一的味道？在巴哈伊传说中，为教殉难的先知巴孛被关押在监狱里时，曾向狱卒请求：为他点一盏灯、以便让他能够写作，但却遭到了狱卒无情的拒绝。于是在巴孛陵寝建成后，人们特意在陵寝内为他点燃了一盏长明不灭的灯。于是，每当夜幕降临海法，卡梅尔山上的巴哈伊花园就会在黑暗中发出光芒，照亮人们行走的道路。

在大家都在对20马英九和20乔石迎来送往的时候，发现时针转了10圈。经过DAC的同意，登上这篇情意深深、爱意浓浓的告朋友书：

亲爱的STC，ZMH，TJ，MCCL，PL：

大家新年好！~

爆竹声中一岁除，又一年匆匆忙忙地结束了，匆忙得让我们来不及数一下自己的脚步，来不及听一下自己的足音。当我们开始回忆自己的日子的时候，却发现岁月如流水一样偷偷滑过；我们拼命想抓住点什么，一切却又都了无痕迹。就像一片从天空飘过的白云，又像一片在秋天落下的树叶，2009年的日子就这样从我们身边溜走了。

世界上最公平的就是日子。一年当中，没有谁的日子会比别人多，大家都拥有365个日日夜夜。同样的365个日日夜夜给每一个人带来的却是不同的收获和感受，不是因为日子不同，而是因为人不同。

新年伊始，我最先想到的就是你们，我亲爱的巴哈伊朋友们。佛陀曾经说过，因果有缘，千百年的轮回皆因缘而起。我想，上辈子，也就是我的前世，我一定是千万次的回眸，亿万次的寻觅，才在滚滚的人流当中遇到你们，唯一的你们。

短短的两年时光，我们在一起分享了很多快乐和智慧。

记得第一年，我有幸能和STC，ZMH一起上课。真的谢谢你们，是你们把我带到了巴哈伊的世界里，和你们的每一堂，都是那么的快乐有收获。

亲爱的STC，谢谢你每次在我回国的时候都能收留我，让我每一次都能准时准点的到机场。两年的时光里，是你让我更加深刻的认识了新加坡，也给我介绍了很多巴哈伊的朋友，无论是在商场，小贩中心还是地铁车站，我想应该都会有我们的足迹吧！哈哈~~~希望你能在2010年顺顺利利，把巴哈伊的福音带给更多的朋友分享。

亲爱的ZMH，虽然第二年由于你工作原因我们没能经常见面，但不可否认，你是我在新加坡最最珍贵的朋友。从你身上，我和TJ都学到了好多。希望你在2010年，在自己事业的道路上，能像一泓清水一样，不管经历多少艰难困苦，都要坚强，勇敢向前，没有什么能够阻挡我们对美好生活，也没有什么能都阻挡我们对自由的向往。愿上帝保佑你。O(∩_∩)O~

亲爱的MCCL，住在Clementi的那段时间里，记得很多时候我们都是很晚搭一班车回家，路途有时虽然很长，但只要和你开始谈天说地，就感觉时间过得好快，一转眼就到家了。呵呵~~~作为华语班的主力军，你真的是幸苦了。很遗憾今年不可以去看你的新家是什么样子，但以后多的是机会。新的一年里，祝你健健康康，开开心心。

亲爱的PL，虽然在北京只是短短的见了一面，但从你的话语中，我能感受到你对巴哈伊的热爱和忠诚。的确，从你身上我看到了传导的力量和分享的快乐，这也同时给了我好多动力。我也希望自己有天能够用自己的力量去感染身边的人。有机会，北京见。祝你在新的一年里，工作顺利。

亲爱的TJ，最后才说到你。没办法，谁让我们这对难兄难弟在新加坡一见如故。我想，你的巴哈伊，就是我的巴哈伊。因为我们几乎走出了一样的轨迹，每一次上课，聚会，游玩，有你便有我。就连MCCL向PL介绍我的时候，还必须说一句：“就是经常和TJ在一起的那个”。哈哈~~我说过，你结婚的时候我一定会去，所以，你要加油啦！~~好兄弟！我在南半球等待你的好消息。~~~

亲爱的你们，我要谢谢巴哈伊，因为是巴哈伊让我们走到了一起。巴哈欧拉已经勾画出天下大同的远景。他已经制定了一个将全世界人民团结的计划，把他们聚集在普天一家的帐篷下。这是恩惠之神的千秋大业。我们大家必须全心全意努力，直到团结在我们中间真正实现。只要我们作出努力，我们就会得到力量。

STC，ZMH，只有和你们上课的时候我才背诵过巴哈伊祷文，现在我还清楚的记得，我自行见证：我的上帝啊！你造生了我，来认识你并崇拜你。我在这时刻表明我的无能和你的万能，我的贫穷和你的富裕。除你之外别无上帝，你是艰苦中的救难者，自有永有者。怎么样？你们的学生还行吧！~

希望和你们在一起的分分秒秒都是一篇灿烂的文字，一段难忘的回忆。

天下没有不散的宴席。马上就要踏上去澳洲的求学之路了。在这里和大家说声“再见”。虽然我们不能见面，但希望你们能记得我，记得我的魔术，记得我们曾经在一起的美好时光。

首先得谢谢CHM的支持和坚持，从这个角度上可以说使英语角在风雨交加的昨晚得以继续下去。我已经两个星期没有参加了，上个星期也因为人数不够，CHM只得放弃，其实她可自个去参加。很喜欢当时的感觉，只有James, Carole, CHM, Jane 还有我，小型的聚会可以更加深入的讨论相关的主题，以及有跟多的机会去练习自己的发音和发表看法。到了这里，有一种自私的念头在盘旋，是否要再发出“征集令”来扩充这个聚会，因为先前的朋友因为住址或工作变换的关系不能够来参加。如果能够维持昨晚类似的规模，那么对参入者来说是很有益处的，人数多了那么机会就没有那么多了，也显得嘈杂，比如中国。

The Thief of Cathay – A Chinese Folk Tale

Once an honored man was having a birthday celebration. His sons and servants were busy receiving guests and messengers bearing gifts and congratulations. A thief, knowing that there would be valuable items among the gifts, slipped into the house and hid himself by lying face down on a beam in the roof of the hall where a great banquet was to be held in honor of the man. From this vantage point the thief could look down over the guests and see all the parcels of silks and jade and jewels that were being offered. He made a note of where these were put and planned to steal them after the guests had departed and the family gone to sleep.

Later that evening, the host lingered over his presents. He was very happy. As he leaned over them to take a final look, he turned his back to the thief hiding on the beam. The thief took a chance to look at the layout of the room so that he would be able to find his way once the lights were put out. As he hung his head over the beam he cast a shadow on the floor.

The host betrayed no sign of having seen the shadow, but he called for his servant and asked him to lay a table for one guest. Then he brought the best food and drink in the house. Turning towards the beam on which the thief lay, and bowing low, he said, ‘Will the gentleman who is on the roof-beam now come down and partake of refreshments?’

There was nothing the thief could do but comply. He was led to the table and his host fed him well. When he had eaten his fill, his host gave him a bag of silver coins and begged him to make good use of them. Then the host saw the thief out courteously.

Ten years passed, and again the honored man held a big birthday celebration. Many visitors came to wish him well and to bring him presents. The man was very old by now and could not greet everyone who called. His grandson met the visitors at the door and invited them to dine with his grandfather in the evening. He then took the gifts in for the old man to see.

Towards the end of the day a stranger came, bearing handsome gifts of gold and jewels. He would not give his name, but insisted that he see the honored man.

The stranger was admitted to the old man’s room, where he was overjoyed to see his host looking so well. The host did not recognize his guest, and, excusing himself by a plea of failing eyesight, inquired his name.

The stranger smiled and sad, ‘I am an honest man. I have learned to live a righteous life. But it was not always so. Do you not recall how you once asked me to come down from the roof-beam and partake of refreshment?’

The host was astonished, but he grew even more so when he heard how his own kindness to the thief had changed the thief’s life to one of righteousness and honor. The coins he had given the thief had been used to begin a small business which had prospered and given work to many. The guest was invited to stay for the banquet, and this time he did not eat alone.

Questions for discussion:
1. Were you surprised that the host fed the thief and gave him money rather than punishing him? Do you think the thief was surprised?
2. Why did the host act the way he did? Do you think he was right or wrong to do that?
3. Why did thief come back after 10 years to give the King a gift? Why did the host’s action 10 years earlier change the thief’s life for the better?
4. Why is it easy to do bad things and sometimes hard to do good things?
5. Can you think of a situation where you had to decide to do either right or wrong? What decision did you make? How did you feel about it afterward?
6. How can we decide what is right and what is wrong?

The Talking Tortoise

A talking tortoise lived high up the slopes of the Himalayan Mountains. Two wild geese occasionally came to his part of the forest and they became friends. Once when the geese came to visit the tortoise, they spoke about a beautiful place, a golden cave, where everyone lived happily together.

‘It sounds like a wonderful place,’ sighted the tortoise, ‘I should love to visit it. I’m afraid everyone here is tired of my chatter. I’d like to meet some more people and see the golden cave. How can I go there? Can I walk?’

The geese laughed. ‘Of course not. You can only fly there, and you don’t have wings!’

The tortoise looked so sad that the two geese felt sorry for him. ‘All right,’ they said, ‘we’ll take you. Bite hold of this stick and we’ll hold it in our beaks and fly you to the golden cave — but whatever you do, don’t open your mouth!’

Off they flew with tortoise hanging onto the stick. As they flew over a village, some men called out, ‘Look at that silly tortoise!’

The tortoise wanted to say ‘What’s so silly?’ but he remembered the golden cave and he remained silent. However, when some children laughed rudely and pointed at him, the tortoise became very angry. He opened his mouth to say, ‘What’s so funny?’ and…fell with a splash into a lake below. So he never saw the golden cave, nor got to talk to any more friends.

Questions for discussion:
1. What is the personality of the tortoise? How is it related to his talking?
2. When should we observe silence? (ex: when we study, when we are told to ‘Be quite’, etc.)
3. What can we gain from being silent? How can it help us grow us humans?
4. Can you think of times when we should not be silent?
5. There is a saying in English: ‘an empty drum makes the loudest noise.’ What does this mean?
6. How is observing silence related to other virtues (ex: humility, compassion, etc.)

拟定标题之前，心中已经回响了多次要在近期进行植树造林活动，此树非彼树也。这个回响的频率似乎表明了是为了这样才生存下来。偶然拾回过去的时光，加深了在树洞的深度，也形成了线性化的冲动要表露出来。但是，这里并不是自己的心灵私家花园，每敲下一个字都是脚后跟与地面碰撞后的结果，而不能自由自在的飞翔。在进行了一些计划后，似乎又是被不同的活动打碎，如玻璃碎片般在地上闪闪发亮，正如人生路旁的风景，被吸引着去追随一个个看似有用却是五彩的泡沫。少了两个色彩，那是好奇心和耐心。阿博都巴哈说：“。。。个人的幸福和伟大、级别和地位、喜悦和安宁从来都不取决于他人的财富的多寡，而在于他出众的性格、坚定的毅力、渊博的知识和他解决问题的能力。”回首，更多的是灯火不能辐射到的地方，有多少未决之事，有多少遗憾之事，有多少可恨之事只能让自己聚焦在那火苗上，纵然失去光明也不愿离开半寸。

It’s Saturday already, and I believe my colleague who missed his flight is finally on the way home now after two years in Singapore. It was lucky that the travel agent willing to renew his flight tickets. E.T. says, home, with his figure pointing to the sky. LQ is at Kuala Lumpur now, it was nice with Teck Cheng and David saw her take off. And thanks from deep heart for Teck Cheng’s wonderful dinner. Beside this, I feel guilty when I realize that she and Margaret trying to “pull me back” from time to time. I wish I can, I couldn’t make it at this moment. There are more evidences prove that I have a weak memory ability, I hope I can solve this problem by reschedule my life style and doing more exercise etc. And the timetable for this rescheduling is still on the schedule.

到中國去。Melic如愿以償踏上了蘭州的土地，而且看起來很快就適應了那邊的生活。迎接他的除了巴哈伊教友，還有條件舒適的居所和學校周圍星羅棋布的餐館。下次見到他時應該會變得胖些和白些。當初就因為留下一個郵件地址，讓我認識了這么好心腸和耐心的人和其他具有上帝屬性的朋友。生命的河流在那個時間點，稍微轉了一個方向。雖然仍在這個方向上徘徊，至少多了一個可能性。儒僖課程已經停下來，不過看到兵哥和GF大哥“接過”研習課程，當然不能作為借口的借口。希望Melic在中國撒下的種子能夠長出參天大樹。無論點樣，唔該噻。

凌晨两点。离床的距离只有零点零零叁公里，而周公却在眼皮底下。TLT姑姑啊，未来不能描绘，或许都明白这一点。面包和黄油并非同时都能够获得，因为很多人还是蛮喜欢用椰浆凑着吃，更不要说油条加豆浆了。向打造本站有史以来最长日志的目标前进到一半，明天继续。将会有很多滥竽充数的图片，而文字会蜻蜓点水般穿插其中。睡觉先。

If I’m not wrong, I’d absented two English Corner held by James & Carole. Because of lack of management of my own paper, I can’t figure out the date when we discussed the following topics:

The Happy Cure **

A foolish king lay dying. At least, that’s what he said. Yes, he said he was at death’s door. But the truth was this: the king was suffering from having nothing to do. He was being bored to death.

Of course, the king would not admit this. He groaned and moaned and complained of sharp stabs in every muscle and sticking pains in every bone. Doctors came from far and wide. They examined the king carefully but could find nothing wrong. ‘The doctors are idiots,’ cried the king in a rage. ‘the next one who examines me and finds nothing wrong will have his ears cut off and his nose shortened.’ But still the doctors came and still they found nothing wrong.

Finally a simple old woman came to see the king. She peered into the king’s face for a long time. Then she said, ‘Your Majesty, you are suffering from a strange and rare disease. So rare and strange, that no name exits for it.’ ‘There I knew it,’ cried the king in glee. ‘I kept telling all of them, the fools, that I’m a sick man.’ ‘A very sick man,’ said the old woman.

The king leaned back among his silken pillows and closed his eyes and wrinkled his brow as if he were in pain. ‘And is there no cure for me?’ he asked. ‘Oh, yes, your Majesty. You need to sleep but one night in the shirt of a happy man and you will be cured instantly.’ said the old woman.

The king summoned the captain of his guard and his bravest and best soldiers and swiftest messengers. ‘Start off at once, ‘ he commanded them, ‘and bring me back the shirt of a happy man. And don’t return without it,’ he said. They traveled far and wide; to the east, west, north and south but nowhere could they find a happy man. They sent long reports to the king and this is what they said:

The people in the east might be happy if your Majesty didn’t tax them so heavily.
And: The people in the west might be happy if they didn’t have to work so long and hard, so they might have time to enjoy singing and dancing.
And: The people in the north might be happy if sometimes they could see you and felt you were interested in them.
And: The people in the south might be happy if your Majesty would notice their industry and faithfulness and would reward them.

The king flung the reports away. But as time passed and no messenger returned he began to read the reports more carefully. More and more reports also came to him with the same message.

One day a little boy was walking on the palace grounds and came upon a man sitting under a tree. He was singing lustily. ‘Good afternoon,’ said the little boy politely. ‘What makes you sing so merrily?’ ‘I sing from joy,’ said the stranger. ‘I love my fellow men. I own but little and want less. I am a happy man and I sing.’ ‘A happy man!’ cried the little boy. ‘Oh, do you not know that the whole kingdom is looking for you? Do you not know that the king is very ill and only if he can sleep one night in the shirt of happy man can he be cured? Quick, quick, take off your shirt and give in to me.’

The man burst into laughter. ‘My shirt,’ he gasped, ‘Why, you silly boy, I don’t have a shirt.’ and jumping to his feet, he gathered his tattered coat and walked off.

The little boy rushed to the palace. ‘Oh, your Majesty,’ he cried. ‘The cure was right here all the time. I found him on the palace grounds. He said he loved his fellow men, owned but little and wanted less. But… but… I’m afraid he didn’t have a shirt.’

The king hung his head ashamed. ‘Yes, the cure has been here all the time,’ he murmured. ‘Only I can cure my own folly.’ And he resolved then and there to be a good king, to help his people, to rule wisely and well. He never fancied himself ill again for he became too busy for such folly, and so he lived to a ripe old age.

3. Do fear, anger, worry have an effect on health? If so, what about hope, love, and joy?
4. How can we assist in the healing of others?
5. There is a saying in English “Health is Wealth”. What does it mean?

8. Someone who is healthy but always things he is sick is called a “hypochondriac”. Do you know any such people? Do you ever fee sick when you are not really sick?

農歷七月。中元節。新加坡所處的地理位置據稱對應的是鬼門關，因此也有朋友說到七月十五晚上盡量不要再外面閑逛，畢竟那個時候是他們的“專場”。下班時分，到處都是煙幕彌漫，為神靈，為祖先，為分管不同事物的神仙奉獻上大把大把的銀錢。這時間上有個分歧，有人說要到夜幕降臨至少太陽下山后才適宜燒紙錢，因為那時候他們才會出來，才會重游舊地；而有的人則說，什么時候燒都是無所謂的。我以為，兩種都是可信的。可以想象另一邊應該有銀行業務，他們不能白天出來領取，那么自然有“法力”高強的機構可以代替保管著。除了自家供奉神靈外，各種聯合體也會大擺宴席宴請各界人士進行各種文娛活動，也就有人抱怨唱歌聽的姐們穿的太暴露了。

I will be home in two weeks time. I need to attend my classmate’s wedding was the main reason to go home at September. It’s better to review their names right now. It’s been five years after graduated. I’m sure it will be a pleasure trip to be there. And it’s the second time I visit Ningbo, the man visited 7 years ago is still no difference. It’s not fair to key in the topics that we used in English corner if I’m going to build this longest post. As for ‘traditional’ reason, it’s all right to do so. I feel exhausted daily, it suppost to be some problem inside my body system. I’d rather not to mention in here. One of the reason might be we need to sleep well:

10 Tips for Better Sleep

Have you been feeling crabby lately? It could be you aren’t getting enough sleep. Work, household responsibilities and child care can make sleeping difficult. If you include other unexpected challenges such as financial worries, layoffs, relationship issues or an illness, quality sleep may be even more elusive.

You may not be able to control or eliminate all of the factors that interfere with your sleep, but you can create an environment and adopt habits that encourage a more restful night. Try these suggestions if you have trouble falling sleep or staying asleep:

Go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on the weekends. Sticking to a schedule helps reinforce your body’s sleep-wake cycle and can help you fall asleep better at night.

Don’t eat or drink large amounts before bedtime. Eat a light dinner about two hours before sleeping. If you’re prone to heartburn, avoid spicy or fatty foods, which can make your heartburn flare and prevent a restful sleep. Also, limit how much you drink before bed. Too much liquid can cause you to wake up repeatedly during the night for trips to the bathroom.

Avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol in the evening. These are stimulants that can keep you awake. Smokers often experience withdrawal symptoms at night, and smoking in bed is dangerous. Avoid caffeine for eight hours before your planned bedtime. Your body doesn’t store caffeine, but it takes many hours to eliminate the stimulant and its effects. And although often believed to be a sedative, alcohol actually disrupts sleep.

Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can help you fall asleep faster and make your sleep more restful. Don’t exercise within three hours of your bedtime, however. Exercising right before bed may make getting to sleep more difficult.

Make your bedroom cool, dark, quiet and comfortable. Create a room that’s ideal for sleeping. Adjust the lighting, temperature, humidity and noise level to your preferences. Use blackout curtains, eye covers, earplugs, extra blankets, a fan, or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs.

Sleep primarily at night. Daytime naps may steal hours from nighttime slumber. Limit daytime sleep to about a half-hour and make it during mid-afternoon. If you work nights, keep your window coverings closed so that sunlight, which adjusts the body’s internal clock, doesn’t interrupt your sleep. If you have a day job and sleep at night, but still have trouble waking up, leave the window coverings open and let the sunlight help wake you up.

Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow. Features of a good bed are subjective and differ for each person. But make sure you have a bed that’s comfortable. If you share your bed, make sure there’s enough room for two. Children and pets are often disruptive, so you may need to set limits on how often they sleep in bed with you.

Start a relaxing bedtime routine. Do the same things each night to tell your body it’s time to wind down. This may include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to soothing music. Relaxing activities done with lowered lights can help ease the transition between wakefulness and sleepiness.

Go to bed when you’re tired and turn out the lights. If you don’t fall asleep within 15 to 20 minutes, get up and do something else. Go back to bed when you’re tired. Don’t agonize over falling sleep. The stress will only prevent sleep.

Use sleeping pills only as a last resort. Check with your doctor before taking any sleep medications. He or she can make sure the pills won’t interact with your other medications or with an existing medical condition. Your doctor can also help you determine the best dosage. If you do take a sleep medication, reduce the dosage gradually when you want to quit, and never mix alcohol and sleeping pills. If you feel sleepy or dizzy during the day, talk to your doctor about changing the dosage or discounting the pills.

If you’re having problems sleeping more than three times a week for a month’s time, see your doctor. You could have a sleep disorder, such as obstructive sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome. Identifying and treating the cause of your sleep disturbance can help get you back on the road to a good night’s sleep.

I’ve almost forget to mention my god sister who is my cousin. Congratulation to her that she become Zijin Middle school’s student. And she become our god sister last Chinese New Year. I try to make it as routine to call home every week, it’s bad manner when you need to be reminded that it’s time to make a home call. I’m also wondering whether it is a good idea to spend the time with them at home at least these years. For God’s sake, you know I can’t make it.

Coyote and Woodpecker

In the forest, there was a great old hollow tree, and Woodpecker and his family lived there. One day, as Coyote was walking, he met Woodpecker.

‘How are you today, my friend?’ said Coyote.
‘Very well, thank you,’ replied Woodpecker. ‘And how are you?’
They talked together for a while. Then Coyote said, ‘Friend Woodpecker, bring your wife and children tonight and join my family for supper.’
‘Thank you, friend Coyote,’ said Woodpecker, ‘We will gladly come.’

That evening, Woodpecker and his family went to the coyotes’ home. They fluttered to the ground and then, as they always do after flying, the woodpeckers stretched themselves. As they lifted their wings, the coyotes could see their pretty red and yellow feathers underneath. And as the woodpeckers ate supper, whenever they raised their wings, their bright feathers could be seen.

After the Woodpeckers had eaten, they thanked their host politely. ‘Please come to our house tomorrow for supper, friend Coyote,’ said Woodpecker. And Coyote said yes, he and his family certainly would.

After the Woodpeckers left, Coyote turned to his family and said, ‘Did you see how those woodpeckers showed off their bright red and yellow feathers? No doubt they think they are more beautiful than we are, and they want to be sure we know it. Well, we will show them that Coyotes are just as beautiful as Woodpeckers.’

The next day, Coyote made all his family work hard gathering many loads of fire wood. When evening came, he built a big fire and called his family there. He tied a burning stick to each of them, under their arms, so that the burning end pointed forward. Then he did the same to himself. ‘Now we coyotes will show those woodpeckers who has beautiful colors!’ he told his family. ‘and don’t you forget to raise your arms often, to be sure they see we are just as good as they are!’ Then the coyotes went to the woodpeckers’ house.

When they came to the hollow tree, Woodpecker welcomed them and invited them in very politely. Together, the woodpecker family and coyote family sat down to supper. As the ate, the coyotes kept raising their arms to show the bright fire underneath. But suddenly one of Coyote’s sons yelled, ‘Ayee! My fire is burning me, papa!’
‘Hush!’ said Coyote, ‘Don’t give us away.
‘Ah!’ sighed one of Coyote’s daughters, ‘My fire is out!’ This was too much for Coyote, and he scolded her.

Then Woodpecker spoke. ‘Tell me, Friend Coyote,’ he said, ‘why is it that your colors are bright red and yellow at first but later become ash gray?’
‘Oh, that,’ said Coyote, smiling pleasantly although he was very angry inside. ‘That is the best thing about our colors, for they do not stay the same – as other people’s do – but turn many shades.’ Coyote made an excuse so that he and his family could leave, for they were all smarting from their burns.

After they left, Woodpecker gathered his family around and said, ‘Now, my children, you have seen that Coyote has tried to do. Never pretend to be what you are not. Always be just what you really are, and never try to act better than another, and you will never need to put on false colors.’

Questions for discussion:
1. Do you think Coyote really felt happier at the end of the story?
2. Why do you think some people try to pretend to be something they aren’t? Do you think they really believe they are better than other people?
3. Have you ever heard of the expression ‘keeping up with the Jones’s'? What does it mean? Do you know anyone who acts like that?
4. Some people buy branded goods or expensive items in order to show off to others. Can you think of any examples?

这段时间看了一些电影和电视剧。上上个周末花了两天将[24]第七季看完，情节还是那么丝丝入扣，但是矛盾方面一直缠绕在是否应该逼供这个点上。Jack Bauer还是那么帅，而且看到CTU的原班人马更加热血沸腾，不过没有看应该是CTU被袭击的第六季。另外追了几集笑来老师推荐的[绝命毒师(Breaking Bad)]，暂时没有什么感觉，不好不坏。

周五的English Corner如期在James & Carole 家举行，总共10人，来自不同地区和不同行业，因此水平参差不齐，不清楚这样的情况是否会对某些朋友帮助不大，但是有些反馈从某个方面证实了这个猜测。谢谢James 和 Carole 抽出时间来为素不相识的朋友提供这样一个机会，希望能够对大家有所帮助。下面是昨晚的材料，又是时间问题，但是这篇跟时间的利用有点篇，不过这也是我一直以来没有做好的方面。Grasshopper的性格是属于那种happy go lucky的，而ants则是industrious。

The Grasshopper and the Ants

This is a well-known story by Aesop that teaches us a lot about using our time wisely:

The merry notes of the violin which the grasshopper was playing floated on the air and reached the place where the ants were busy collecting food.

‘It’s the grasshopper again!’ they said. ‘He’s always playing that violin of his. He never seems to do any work.’ Just then the grasshopper danced by. He stopped when he saw the ants. ‘Why are you working on such a beautiful spring day?’ he asked. ‘Why aren’t you dancing and singing?’

‘We must collect our food now,’ said the Queen of the ants. ‘If we don’t, what will we do when the winter comes?’ ‘Oh, winter’s a long way off,’ said the grasshopper. ‘You take life much too seriously.’

‘But you must work today if you want to eat tomorrow,’ said another ant. ‘You can play your violin when you have finished,’ said another as the little ants scurried busily about.

The grasshopper didn’t want to heed their advice. ‘Go on with your work, my little friends,’ he said. ‘I’m going to dance in the meadow in the sun.’ And so the grasshopper left the busy ants and went on his way, singing.

The spring soon passed and the warm days of summer came. All day long the grasshopper played his violin in the shade of the bright summer flowers, or lazily sat in the sun, or slept on a blade of grass. But the summer was soon over, the days began to get colder and the leaves turned from green to brown and fell from the trees. Many of the animals began their winter sleep.

One morning the grasshopper woke up and was surprised to see that snow had fallen during the night. He shivered and looked for a green leaf for food. But although he searched and searched he could not find a thing. The land was covered with a thick carpet of snow and the ground underneath was as hard as iron. The long winter had come. ‘Oh dear, oh dear! What shall I do?’ cried the grasshopper. ‘I shall die of hunger, I shall freeze to death!’ The grasshopper wandered around looking for a place to keep warm but there was no such place. ‘How silly I was not listen to the ants. While I am dying of cold and hunger they are sitting in their warm house with plenty to eat.’

And sobbing loudly the grasshopper sat down in the snow. The ants heard his sad cry and as they were really kind creatures they came hurrying to help him. By this time the poor grasshopper was frozen stiff. The ants picked him up and carried him back to their nest. The ants cared for the grasshopper until he felt better and the spring had returned again. Never did the grasshopper forget the lesson he had been taught.

Questions for discussion:
1. How long you spend every day on important tasks (work or study, sleep, eating)?
2. How do you usually spend your free time (on weekdays, on weekends)?
3. How much of your free time is well spent and how much frittered away?

Neda在街头被射杀，使她成为反伊朗政府的一面旗帜。在Facebook上收到巴哈伊社区的一封信，主要是让信徒不要在facebook上发表政治言论，如果要上街游行，也不宜用伊朗政府为目标，只能以个人名义参加，而且必须是与和平等无关政治的主题－－如果我没有理解错的话。一开始，巴哈伊信仰就告诉信徒不要与政府为敌。有些教规我并不是很了解，比如等会要跟大家分享的一段文字中就有让我困扰的内容。

上个周五在Margaret的店铺里头恢复了每月的读书会，内容是关于阿博都巴哈的事迹。就个人而言，上面的链接并不是了解巴哈伊的一个好的途径，因为，这本《完美的典范》更多的是一小段一小段的堆彻。

大概半年前开始每个月有两个中文聚集会，一个是在May Bong家，另外一个是在Tze Hong 和 Jing Lan家。上周六如往常一样，Jing Lan为大家准备了好吃的食物，然后分享下面一段关于巴哈欧拉的故事：

人类未来的高贵

人类是顽固而有叛逆性的，他们的生命里充满了过错和罪恶，但由于上帝是慈悲的，所以祂宽恕了祂的仆人。真确的，要不是上帝的恩典，祂是不会创造万物的，而人类也不能在今世或来世获得进步。但是，充塞宇宙万物的神恩是不会施与那些既承认上帝的显圣，却有明知故犯地反对祂的人。事实上，这种违反上帝圣约的行为是不可原谅的，这会给他的生命带来死亡－－除非他真心忏悔转向上帝。巴哈欧拉启示的目的就是要创造一种可以显现致为崇高的属性与道德的新人类。人类未来之高贵可以由下面一篇故事看出来：

。。。有一次，一群波斯王子到了巴哈欧拉跟前，巴哈欧拉和他们谈话并且很亲切的询问他们国内的新闻。交谈当中，一位王子说：“为什么在你的朋友面前，你和他们谈灵性的事，而和我们谈的却是市井闲话呢？”他的意思是问，这些没有知识，没有见识的市井小民怎么优于我们呢？巴哈欧拉回答说：

“。。。我可以告诉你什么人才值得到我跟前倾听我的话语。假如有一个人被带到一片平原上去，他的右边放置了这个世界上所有的光荣，所有的乐趣和舒适，再加上一个永存而不受侵袭又不哀伤的统权；左边则放置着永恒不止的灾难，艰困，痛苦和巨大的责难。这时假设圣灵出现在这个人的面前并对他说：‘如果你选择了右边的永恒快乐而不是左边的灾难，你在上帝眼里的地位不会受到任何减损。反之，如果你选择了左边而宁愿遭受无数的灾难，你在上帝的眼里的地位也不会有任何增添。‘，这时这个人至为渴望，至为热忱的选择了左边，那他就有资格到我跟前聆听我崇高的话语。此时，伟大之舌对慕道者说：’如果你的目标是珍惜你的生命，就不要趋近我们的天庭；但如果你内心渴望是牺牲，就让你和其它的人一起来吧！如果你的内心寻求与我重聚，这就是信仰之道；如果你拒绝行走这条道路，又何必来打扰我们呢？走开吧。‘“巴哈欧拉又对他说：“在这个充满暴君和叛逆者的腐败世界里，他们的残暴与压迫行为阻碍了全人类的和平与安宁，我降世的目的就在于透过上帝的力量与权柄，建立起正义，信任，安全和信仰的力量；比如说（将来）有一位妇女拥有举世无双的美貌，身上装饰着至为精巧无价的珠宝，不戴面纱，独自从世界的东边旅行到西边去，经过许多地方，旅行过各个国家，那时的正义，可靠，信仰的标准会如此的高，且没有叛逆和堕落的行为，以致不会有人抢劫她的东西或。。。“然后巴哈欧拉确认地说：“透过上帝的力量，我要将世人置于那崇高的地位，为全人类开启这扇至大之门。”

在这方面，巴哈欧拉启示了下面这段有关巴哈子民的话：

“那些到了一座充满黄金的山谷而能将之视为浮云，径直通过，既不回头又不停止的人才是我的真信徒。这种人真正属于我。天上的会众可以从他衣袍上闻到神圣的芬芳。。。如果他碰到最美丽的女人，他的内心不会受到欲望的半点诱惑。”

巴哈欧拉继续和王子说：

“关于动机的诚恳和行为的纯洁方面，伟大之舌如此说：‘假如有一位非常富有的人，他的财富多得无法估量。又假设这位富人在一段时间里逐渐把许多财富给了一位穷人。。。结果他变成一个穷人，而那为穷人呢反而变得非常富有。。。再假设，他在这既贫且困的情况下又负了债；由于无法清偿，他被带到公共的广场上羞辱和处罚。他接到通知说，除非清偿债务，否则便不能获释。这时假如他看到那位变富的朋友，他心里闪过一丝念头，期望这位朋友此时会感恩图报，前来解救他，他的所有善行就会立刻化为乌有，他就会被剥夺自足和默从的德行，并于人类的灵性道德隔绝。

对那位变成富人的人来说也一样，如果他心里认为那变穷人的朋友从前对他有无尽的仁慈和爱心，所以他有义务清偿他的债务，解除他的困厄，使他的余生得以在舒适中度过；这种动机使他回报了那位朋友，如此会剥夺他的诚恳之杯，使他落入耻辱的世界。

唯一能被上帝接受的方式就是，前一位富人的善举是基于人道原则，为了上帝而做的；同理，第二位富人也应该为了人世，为了上帝而行善举，而非为过去或未来的一些事由而做。因此有启示道：‘我们因上帝之故而培育你的灵魂，不是为了你的报答活酬谢’。。。”

昨晚跟Teck Cheng以及新朋友WXM一起去James & Carole家参加他们里礼拜五晚上的聚会，J&C的家小巧玲珑，一目了然，布局科学没有一丝多余的设施，纯白色的风格让人感觉放松和整洁。话题不停转换，期间提到J&C在厦门大学任教时在他们家里举办英语角的往事，他们也怀念在中国的日子，现在只是要照顾家人不能离开新加坡。J&C主动提出要在现在这个新家举办英语角的想法，因为想多认识来自中国的朋友，希望我以及WXM能够带朋友来参加。我暗自思量，“手头”上没有合适的人选，在“为此消得人憔悴”之前想到是否可以在论坛上发发帖子，看是否有这方面需求的朋友，因此就有了“征集令：东部英语角招募成员”这个砖头贴。到目前为止，反应还算喜人，由于日程安排的原因要到七月第一个周末才有可能开始。也因此跟HXY见了个小面，不管是否她能够留下来，在这里祝一路顺风。

昨天去大使馆去更换护照，8点55分赶到，9点开门，然后将资料上交上去，9点24分离开那里，速度之快让我大感惊异。一方面是因为之前准备好所有的资料，连申请表都是从网上打印填好；另一方面，人数少是一个主要原因。在上班时间之前，在大使馆外面排了一队不算短的人龙，我在后面跟上时不免感觉人在外面没有受到照顾，如果是下雨的话，就惨了，说到底，当初设计以及现在都没有为办理证件的公民提供必要的协助。另外一点就是，拿号还是手工的阶段，根本没有什么电子设备，让人觉得很土。

Tampines Regional Library十点才开门，但是9点40分时大门外面就站了里外三圈的人，明天可以10点才到，因为还是有足够的位子供人学习。所以不明白他们为什么要提前20分钟在那里像排队一样入去抢购，不过知识是应该被抢购的，另外，电源插座有限可能是其中原因吧。

希望可以在这里呆一天，自从星期三在这花了三个小时记记单词后，感觉好极了。那么在接下来的这段时间，期望完成以下任务：

1. 略读Ways to Urbanisation – Post-War Road Development in Hong Kong (建城之道 – 战后香港的道路发展) by Ho Pui-yin (何佩然) ISBN 978-962-209-052-1
2. 复习ITE的Automotive Technology
3. 继续学习How to Read a Book (如何阅读一本书) 1972年版
4. 看看窗外的芭蕉树（还是椰子树？）

在新书架上扫到这本以绿色为基调的书，主要是给书脊的黄色调和书面的绿色调搭配吸引，尽管有330多页，但这是有中英文对照形式写成，再加上大量的历史图片，因此保守估计这样的字数是博士论文的规格。除了书封颜色的起因，根据简介，这是关于香港道路发展的历史和据此而来的相关政策、文化以及城市布局的探讨，正好可以拿来用《如何阅读一本书》中的方法练练兵。

Ways to Urbanisation Introduction
“This books focus on a crucial internal problem – Hong Kong’s post-war road development from 1946 to present. Observation are made on road development in the post-war period and its impact on the city’s development through the study of areas such as the building and expansion of road network; the establishment and operation mechanisms of the departments responsible for road works; and the formulation, implementation and promotion of transport policy. This allow us to undertake further assessment of issues such as the characteristics of post-war urbanization in Hong Kong, population distribution and land use, and inter-relationships between internal social changes and the city’s rapid development, with an expectation that this world serve as reference for the city’s further development.”

香港先天条件不足，自然资源匮乏，山多平地少，人口庞大，但仍取得今天的成就，关于改城市布局的资讯就尤为吸引人。全书根据年份从1946年开始每20年为一个阶段分成上中下三篇：

Part One: Opening up a New World (开辟新天地)
Part Two: New Opportunities, New Challenges (新机遇新挑战)
Part Three: An International Metropolis (国际都会)

比较感兴趣的有如下几章：
P12 Expansion Limitations (扩张局限)。1941年英国顾问David J. Owen认为要集中在城市的核心区域如中环、湾仔、尖沙嘴开发道路网络，利用填海工程创造空间。
P14 The First Blueprint (首份蓝图) / P15 Emergency Counter-Measures (应急对策)。1948年Patrick Abercrombie发表的Hong Kong Preliminary Report (香港初步报告书) 表明全港道路设施首次被纳入整体城市规划。这份报告着重强调香港的地形复杂型，建议采用主要干线的建设；合理设置支线与干线的接驳点；多设停车位；安置和转移人口密集区。但这建议以及后来类似报告直到1960年代初才被采纳。
P21 Long-Term Strategy (长远策略)。1966年跨部门讨论The Colony Outline Plan (殖民地规划大纲)。而1968年由Freeman, Fox, Wilbur Smith And Associates完成的Hong Kong Long Term Road Study (香港道路长远发展研究) “以1966年人口统计为基准，推算香港各区在未来20年人口增长趋势、人口分布及生活水平，从而预测未来公共交通的需求量，设计公共交通未来的发展方向”不失为一个亮点。
P25 Population Distribution and Road Development (人口分布与道路发展)。虽然大型道路工程与各区人口增长趋势和分布有一定关系，但不一定以疏导人口为首要任务。
P32 New Management Thinking (管理新思维)。根据历年Highways Department (路政署) 财政支出分析资源分配和利用与经济发展速度和需求的隐性联系。同时依据路政署雇员的专业人员所占比例提升说明整体城市规划与合理发展离不开专才。
P35 Integration with Pearl River Delta (融入珠三角)。包括兴建深圳西部通道工程和港珠澳大桥。

关于这本书，就先告一段落。回望记录下来的摘要，又不免有种担心会遗失某些重要的知识点。其实如果不这样抽出几章认为比较重要的篇幅，最后很有可能原样奉还给图书馆。从书架上拿下来时想从中获取的似乎是香港的道路发展历史以及发展过程中遇到的问题和应对策略。这本书只是大略的描述了一下各个时期的发展侧重点。现在更为关注的却是她如何组织庞大的资料，将它们揉合到一起，然后能够出版。

今天继续迷失在自己的世界里面，道路曲折，只能希望远处的光明不灭。昨天在图书馆呆到6点多就去牛车水跟Tech Cheng和David碰碰面，然后东转西走一直到半夜才回来。下面给出MLTR的25分钟，STC说歌词是个故事来的，以前也听过，不过还是比较喜欢That’s Why (You Go Away)和Someday。

昨晚由于散的太晚，QL哥哥就在我这里打地铺，不过缘由有点奇怪，不好猜测，可能有时候碰到合适的人是要多花点时间沟通沟通，而不去考虑现实中的情况，比如…MRT的营业时间。其实呢不用非得每句话都往巴哈欧拉上面靠，又或者意识形态句子太多会觉得闷的，而且也曲高和寡。大家在ZH和JL家里呆的不错，就我自身感觉而言，不会在那里感觉拘束就足够了，至于每次有什么收获则是可遇不可求的。BTW，曲高和寡的英文翻译应该是这个：“Songs of high-brow type will find very few people to join in the chorus.”

由于我们的LQ慷慨解囊，使我能够有个机会在她崭新的苹果机上装个XP看看。倒霉的是，我只是参考茫茫网络上中的一篇“教程”来操作分区大计，只能以失败告终也巨耗时。最后还是放弃建立共用区域，以及在XP下在分区的打算，按部就班地follow下面的两项基本原则终于将XP加塞到MAC中：

1. 到选择安装分区的时候，不要删除已经建立好的分区（bootcamp），直接选择C盘。
2. 要选择格式化C盘，然后再安装。不能选择保持现有系统无变化。

话说回来，在尝试着各种组合的时候由于时间太晚，没有再去试试建立共用分区的想法，之前的尝试中有建立过，但是由于没有按照上面原则，总是有“disk error”的出现。

在考过驾驶基本理论后，拖了一个多月，昨天怀着忐忑不安去Ubi的交警局拿到这边的驾照。虽然有一个必须在来新之日算起6个月前通过的驾照才有资质转换当地驾照，而且该职员也在我的申请表上写上入境日期，不过还是拿到了临时驾照，等两个星期就可以收到正式的驾照。这也是我担心的原因，结果是等了两个小时没有白费。整个过程比较简单，去报名考基本理论考试，然后拿驾照去初等法院弄个公证翻译，就可以去交警局申请了。CASL帮了很大的忙，当然也不排除其它可能性，因为有时候可以用这个驾照帮他或别人顶替某些offece。昨晚ZH说起几年前的一个事情，有个人很积极参加教会的活动，很活跃而且给人的印象很不错，最后才发现她跟很多教友借了不等数目的钱，但是由于没有写下借款合同或借条，因此最后只好不了了之。对中国人来说，朋友借钱还要写借条比较伤感情，当然现在也在正在改变。另外他也说了一个去追款项的方法，就是每天发条短信给借款人，不说别的，就是早上好，晚上好之类的，这样对方就心知肚明了。

同事在看《我的青春谁做主》，其中有米莱（钱小样）在，不过夏琳却不在其中，当初还有跟Felicity和Sophia争论过为什么比较喜欢夏琳，这个电视剧也是Felicity推荐的，我看了简介和现在不时的瞄瞄另外一个屏幕，算是看过了。虽然有些对白很有趣，人物背景设置和关系上却是不合实际。我想Felicity推荐的原因是里面有很多不同的人生，选择自己可以承担和喜欢的就可以了。前天晚上跟LQ去见一个朋友，在去之前没有什么预定的计划，只是聚聚而已，开始的时候还不错，但是后半部分她介绍起她所做的工作，关于公司的集资和分红方式，嗯，气氛就有点改变了。虽然没有完全了解这种运作规模，好奇的是如何去保证那个利润呢。所处在她公司开的cafe环境不错，食物也上道，有时间再研究研究。

OK，再往前看看。

上个星期天跟BL去公司对面的石雾洞问神，他早早就帮我拿了个号码，之前他看了一回，拿了个中药药方吃了有一点点效果。在正式之前，该uncle先大喊一声，然后身体向前向后大幅度晃一下，再说说几句我听不懂的话，之后问神正式开始。他又两个主要助手，一个负责写药方，另一个负责安排衔接部分。轮到我的时候，BL托付他要用国语跟我说，因为福建话我怎么都不明白。身体没有什么大碍（对这个我存疑），建议我不要给自己太大压力，平时不要喝有气汽水，少吃点辣的东西，然后给我写了张中药药方，吃三次就可以了。说说花费的事情，邮箱钱4元，给写药方的uncle“小费”2元，这是“市场价”。在那种药方上有一行字：“泗海张公圣君神医男妇老幼奇难什症”。看完这个，就去赴Andy的约，不过还是离约定的时间前2分钟给放鸽子了。他落下LQ跟我在四马路上瞎逛，既然有先前去问神的经历，那么再去鼎鼎有名的观音庙问问签也就水到渠成。求签有两个道具，一个是签筒里面的签子，另一个就是一对腰果型的擲筊，这是确认签条的正确性，也就是double confirm。我拿到的是第五签，签文中曰：“一锥旱地要求泉，努力求之得最难；无意俄然遇知己，相逢携手上青天。”曰解：“欲望心事，西方可求；不如莫动，立地可谋。”还有一行字是：“丑宫，此卦锥地求，泉之象凡事，先难后易也。”来个英文版：“KWAN IM THONG HOOD CHO (TEMPLE) No. 5

然后在武吉士赶在20日之前买下纵贯线在七月份的演唱会票，因为有10%的折扣，尝试一下一个人看演唱会的感觉，同时这也是第一次去看演唱会。买下后，发现音乐剧猫正在上演，马上和LQ决定进行星期二的“歌剧之旅”。一直有听闻音乐剧猫的一些消息，不过了解的不够，两天的突击也没有提高多少，因为觉得它本来就没有什么故事性，也没有什么诉求。幸亏事先看了一会简介和各个段落的内容，否则真的不知道他们在唱什么，事后自我安慰认为有在欣赏音乐和舞蹈啦。嗯，由于没有看过其他的音乐剧，所以没有对比性，没有对比性也就没有评价了。人一有对比，烦恼也就来了。舞台的布局没有期待中的那么“惊艳”，估计录像的比较好看，而且也不会忽略其他的细节，在现场总是会漏看了舞台最后面的一些细节。看的过程中突然想起Eole很久前写的一篇文章，如何面对心中的那一点感触呢，生活吗。刚刚收到她的留言，对我提出如何看书的回答。
