Digital Photography Secret 13 – Use Red Eye Reduction Flash
by David Peterson

Most newer cameras have two flash modes. Standard and Red Eye Reduction.

The Red Eye Reduction flash causes the camera to flash multiple times before taking the shot to get the subject’s eyes used to the bright light.

Use this whenever taking photographs of people looking directly at the camera in low light.

Many people don’t realise they needed to use the red-eye flash until after they look at their photos after the event. So remember to use red eye reduction whenever taking photos in the following situations :

# People looking directly at the camera
# Low Light
# Using your flash.

It is also possible to remove Red Eye with software programs if you don’t have this feature on your camera. There are a few free programs available to do this on the Internet. My Image Editing Secrets course shows a video for how to do this on day 3.

Another option is to use Picasa. This is a free image manipulation program from Google that does a great job of removing red eye. To download for free, click here.

Different lighting can change the mood and feel of a shot, or be the difference between a mediocre and stunning shot.

The light from the setting sun can produce wonderful lighting for a subject, as does sunlight through leaves. Maybe you see a shaft of light between two large objects such as buildings that can be a perfect backdrop for your subject.

Other options for different light sources at night include :

# Neon lights make great night time subjects. You can silhouette your subjects in front of them, or use them as a subject themselves.
# Use a long exposure on a tripod to capture streaks of car lights on a road or highway, or other moving lights like on a ferry.

Digital Photography Secret 10 – Use Continuous Shooting
by David Peterson

Have you ever miss-timed a shot? You know what I mean… The ‘blowing out the candles’ shot has the candles already blown out!

Most digital cameras have a continuous shooting mode, where shots are taken one after the other in rapid succession.

When taking shots, there is often a short delay between when you press your finger on the button, and when the picture is actually taken. This delay may mean your subject has finished their action (eg blowing out candles on a cake) and you have missed the magic moment.

With Continuous Shooting you can take a sequence of shots and keep just the right one. Continuous Shooting also increases you chances of capturing a candid moment.

Where else can this be useful? Any shots of children or group shots will benefit from continuous mode.

Digital Photography Secret 09 – Using Flash During The Day
by David Peterson

What? Use a flash during the day? Are you mad?

Actually, no! It’s one of the big secrets that the pro’s keep from us!

Interestingly, one of the best uses of your flash is during bright sunlight! I know it sounds strange but it’s true.

A flash helps to eliminate dark shadows (for instance under the eyes and chin of faces). It also helps to emphasize your subject.

When you take pictures of subjects with bright light behind them, for example a portrait that is backlit, or a duck swimming in water reflecting the sun, the camera will be fooled by the bright surroundings so the subject appears dark.

By turning flash on, you will fill in the shadow areas making the picture much more pleasing.

It can also be used to add a sparkle to eyes, and to reduce shadows under the nose and eyes when pictures are taken when the sun is bright and high in the sky (eg at midday).

Nature photographers even use flash to ensure the nooks and crannies of flower petals are properly lit – to reduce shadows.

Professional photographers use flash much more often than amateurs.

by David Peterson

Most photos are shot at eye level. I think this is because traditionally, you needed to have the viewfinder up to your eye to ensure you get everyone in the shot.

Because most digital cameras have an inbuilt LCD, you can now take the camera away from your eye and try taking photos from unusual angles.

Try tilting the camera left or right to better position your subject in the frame. Try taking the photo from below, or above your subject. Try getting further away or closer. The main point is to move the camera away from eye level and experiment!

There’s always more than one way to photograph a subject. Using different camera angles can make an otherwise boring image really stand out. The more you practice using different angles, the quicker you’ll know what works and what doesn’t.

Angle Tip : Lie on the ground and point your camera towards the sky for an interesting angle to shoot large monuments with.

Welcome to your second week of tips. I hope that you have implemented some of the tips in the first week of secrets and have already created some stunning photographs.

Digital Photography Secret 07 — Use A Tripod
by David Peterson

I know what you’re going to say! You hate tripods! They’re so bulky to take with you.

But trust me – tripods can make a seriously big difference to your photography.

Yes, tripods can be a hassle to carry around with you but they help you take great shots in two ways.

First, the time you take to get out the tripod, set it up and position the camera on it will slow your picture taking down. This means you’ll become more aware of other elements like composition of the image, and lighting. The more focussed you are to external conditions, the more likely you will be to take a great shot.

The added advantage is your camera is more steady allowing you to take razor-sharp images – particularly in low light situations.

An alternative to the tripod is a ‘mono pod’. These only have one leg and don’t have the stability of a tripod, but they have a greater stability than just your hands – particularly if you lean them against something.

If you do a lot of mountain walking, there are also extendable ‘walking canes’ (like a ski pole) that are great for helping you walk up steep hills. The top unscrews to reveal a tripod mount underneath turning it into a mono pod.

Tripod Tip : If you have a lightweight camera, you might consider purchasing a ultra lightweight tripod. These are small, don’t weigh much and easily fit in a backpack or camera bag.

Extra Tip : You don’t need to purchase a tripod either! Any horizontal surface around can make a tripod – arms of chairs, railings, rocks, anything! Be very careful not to damage your camera, though as cameras have a tendency to slip and break when perched on chairs, rocks etc.

Digital Photography Secret 05 — Take More, And Erase Your Shots

The ability to erase your photos is one of the major advantages of a digital camera. You’d be mad not to use this to the fullest extent!

Take MANY more shots than you think you need, and then erase those that aren’t right.

Every half an hour, go back through your most recent photos erase any that don’t make the grade, or you have better versions of.

Because you’ll be erasing often you can just keep the ‘best of the best’. Erasing often also ensures you don’t need a large memory card, as it will not be storing your not-so-perfect images.

If you’re always pressed for time, you can either invest in a larger memory card, or copy your images to another storage device like a laptop or card storage unit until a later point.

This is also a huge tip when photographing groups. With such a large number of people, there always seems to be someone blinking, or looking the other way. Having a large number of shots means you can pick the best of them to keep.

Children make a wonderful subject. Here are some tips for ensuring photos of children are even more memorable.

Meet them eye-to-eye
Bring yourself down to the child’s level even if you need to crouch down. This will give your shots a ‘kids eye view’ and won’t distort their image (as taking the shot from above does).

Capture natural expressions
While posed shots are great, often better results can be gained by capturing an image when their thoughts are preoccupied with something else, eg while at play. You’ll capture their faces enjoying the moment rather than thinking about the camera.

Familiarity ensures success
Children who have grown up having their photo taken will be a lot less likely to freeze or show off in front of a camera. Start early and make photo taking a part of every day out.

Children grow up quickly
Record their growth from toddler to child to young adult by taking a family photo every year around the same time, either the first day of school, or during spring events.

Digital Photography Secret 03 — Place your subject off-center
by David Peterson

Rather than placing your main subject in the middle of the screen, place it to one side and ensure something interesting is in the background that fills the remainder of the image.

This can be especially effective if the background has the same theme. For example, if photographing a child opening a Christmas present, frame them to one side and have the Christmas Tree with unopened presents filling the rest of the image.

There are a few guidelines that can help you place your subject in the frame.

The Rule of Thirds

One of the most popular rules in photography is the “Rule of Thirds”. It is a simple rule that can add dynamism to your photos. Simply, divide the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. When composing your shot, place important elements either along these lines, or where the lines intersect – NOT at the centre of the frame.

For example, place a subject’s eyes where the top line is, or place your subject on the place in the image where two of these lines intersect.

It’s a very simple rule to follow and will result in a nicely balanced, easy on the eye picture. It also helps get rid of the ‘tiny subject and large amount of space’ tendency because you need to position items relative to the edges of the frame.

Having said this, the Rule of Thirds is also one of the rules you’ll want to break often! This is fine – the Rule of Thirds is more of a guideline and sometimes you will find a better image when you break the rule.

Digital Photography Secret 02 – Use Optical rather than Digital Zoom
by David Peterson

Cameras are marketed with both an Optical Zoom and Digital Zoom capability.

If you’ve used a film camera, you’ll be used to optical zoom. Optical zoom uses the lens of the camera (the optics) to bring the subject closer. Digital zoom uses clever software to digitally enlarge a portion of the image – thus simulating optical zoom.

So, which is better? Definitely Optical zoom. Here’s why.

Digital zoom is not really ‘zoom’ in the strictest definition of the term. Digital zoom just enlarges the image. Eg it takes a portion of the image and enlarges it back to full size. You lose quality because of the enlargement process so photos that have been taken with digital zoom won’t look as good as those without.

You can perform the same result using image editing software on your computer. In fact, it can be better to crop and enlarge using your image software in your computer as you can decide exactly what part of the image to enlarge, and how much to enlarge by.

So when taking shots, use optical zoom only. If you need to zoom in further, use your editing software to select the best part of the image to keep. Ensure your camera warns you when it’s switching to digital zoom from optical zoom, or use your settings to disable digital zoom entirely.

Why is clarity important? The more clarity you have in your image, the larger the printed size can be without the image appearing fuzzy, or blocky. If you want to keep clarity in your images, use the optical zoom whenever possible, and avoid the digital zoom.

How do you use Optical Zoom? When you zoom in using your camera, it will use Optical zoom first and then use Digital zoom. You can usually set your camera to notify you when it starts to use the Digital zoom, or tell it to not use digital zoom at all. Consult your manual for details.

Digital Photography Secret 01 – Move In Closer
by David Peterson

Almost any shot will look better if you take two or three steps closer to your subject. Filling the frame entirely with your subject will make a terrific difference to your photos.

Alternatively, instead of moving closer, use the Optical or Digital Zoom of your camera to get a close up shot. (Preferably Optical zoom – I’ll tell you why tomorrow)

When taking shots of family and friends, most people place the subject’s full body in the frame, or place head and arms in the shot. Instead, fill the frame with your subject’s FACE only – particularly if they are smiling or are in a moment of reflection.

Why does this work? With less clutter in the image, there’s less to draw the eye away from the main subject of your photo. Also, human faces (particularly children’s faces) are something we all feel pleasure looking at.

If you can’t get close enough when you’re taking the shot, you can zoom in later using photo editing software – crop out everything except the subject’s face and see what a difference it makes.

When using the viewfinder for close shots, be careful of Parallax. Because the viewfinder is not at the same position as the camera’s lens, centering the subject in the viewfinder may mean it is not centered for the lens resulting in an off-center final picture. Most digital cameras now come with an inbuilt LCD screen.

Straits Times, April 21, 2010, first page advertisement:

So exotic, they’re only found at ant-hills, termite mounds and the finest restaurants.

Does an adventurous palate justify brutality? Before this delicacy reaches the table, the pangolin is smuggled in crammed cages, hammered in the head and scalded in boiling water. To save it from the chopping board, Wildlife Reserves Singapore works with enforcement agencies to stop this illegal trade. By rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing the pangolin into protected area, we can keep it far from the chef’s specials.

都有点后悔这个举动，Let it Be.

(Cash back insurance policy)

Cash back insurance policy by Tan Kin Lian

I wish to explain why a cash back insurance policy gives a poor yield to the consumer.

A cash back policy combined a basic policy with an annual refund feature. Let us take a hypothetical case. The basic policy is a whole life policy with an annual premium of $5,000 and a yield at the end of 25 years of 2% per annum. The cash back feature adds an additional premium of $1,000 and pays $950 a year from the 2nd year (i.e. no payment for the first year). The cash back feature reduces the yield to 1.8% per annum.

The agent tells the customer that he is getting a cash back every year (after the first year) and makes it look like a more attractive policy. But the agent does not explain that the yield has reduced or the effect of deduction has increased with the cash back feature.

The agent earns commission on the increased premium of $6,000 (including the premium paid for the cash back feature). If the distribution cost is 200%, the customer will be paying $12,000 in distribution cost, including the cost attributable to the cash back feature.

It does not make sense for the customer to pay a higher premium for the cash back feature and get back less than the increased premium. But the consumer does not know about this structure of the policy. The agent tells the consumer that this is an “innovative policy”.

(FAQ: Buy Motor Insurance Directly)

American Home (AIG), Tel No. 6419 1000 Fax No. 6835 7401 http://www.aig.com.sg/

FAQ: Buy Motor Insurance Directly

Here are the tips to pay less for your motor insurance.

1. Put a reminder in your diary two months before the expiry date of your motor insurance policy.

2. Get the following particulars of your motor car:

Particulars of car (model, engine capacity*, year of registration, market value*)
Particulars of owner (age, years of driving experience, occcupation)
Type of cover (comprehensive, third party only, third party with fire and theft)
No-claim discount for past year
Any claims during the current year?
Previous year’s premium

* these data are optional and may not be asked by some insurers (as they can figure them out using your car model).

Normally, you ask for Comprehensive cover. If your car is too old, the insurer may offer Third Party cover only.

3. Get the hotline number of the top motor insurers, e.g. NTUC Income, AIG, AXA

4. Give a call to the hotline and ask for a quote. Ask them if you give you a discount for calling them directly. If they charge a higher premium than for your previous year, ask them why they are charging more. (They may give you a discount to attract your business).

5. If you are not sure about the quality of the claim service, call the claim hotline now (i.e. do not wait until you have an accident) and see if it is easy to get through and if the staff is polite and friendly.

6. Make your decision two weeks before expiry.

7. Contact Details

Here are the contact numbers of the insurance companies that are active in motor insurance.

American Home (AIG), Tel No. 6419 1000 Fax No. 6835 7401 http://www.aig.com.sg/

Tan

The General Insurance Association of Singapore的简称，也就是新加坡的保险业行会。

Hi Mr. Tan

I was involved in a car accident, where a Volvo slammed into the back of my vehicle. I brought my vehicle to IDAC. After inspection, I brought my vehicle to an NTUC authorized workshop in UBI. I have just got my vehicle back. I would like to know:

1) Is it the usual procedure for the workshop to claim my medical expenses? The workshop I went to simply asked me to hand over all my medical bills and they will assist to “claim on my behalf”.
Reply: A good insurance company will assist you to make this claim. But they prefer to have the easy way out. So, you have to depend on the workshop to do it for you.

2) Would I be able to know how much the insurer of the Volvo is liable to pay to the workshop I went to? I have heard stories from my friends that very often, the workshop will get to claim a much larger amount from the insurer and they would only pass a fraction of that money to me.
Reply: You are entitled to have your car repaired to its condition before the accident. How much the insurer pays to the workshop is a separate matter.

3) Am I also able to claim for lost allowance / hardship for the injuries caused to me? (I suffered a badly bruised right eye) What would be the procedure to do this? Can I just leave it to the workshop to claim this for me
Reply: You can make this claim by writing direct to the insurance company. But they tend to give a low amount to the claimant. So, many claimants prefer to engage a lawyer to make the claim. Try the lawyer.

4) I am upset over the transparency of the entire motor insurance claims procedure. In your expertise is there a better way to do this?
Reply: It is the duty of a good insurance company to make it easy for you to claim for your losses. You should insist on a high standard of service and assistance from the insurance company.
If they fail to do so, you should lodge a complaint. Read my blog about “Consumer complaint to MAS”.

War Strategies
战略

As everyone should know, Harem has declared war on us. Our guys in the northern region of the southwest have been doing an excellent job, but they can’t do it alone. Here are some ways you can help, even if you’re not nearby.

Sending Resources

War is expensive, and often both sides suffer heavy casualties. All the troops a member works weeks to build up can be taken out in one evening. Often times the member won’t have enough resources to rebuild their army, either offensive or defensive. I encourage all of you not in the immediate Harem region to send regular resource shipments to those who are in the region. Please remember not to send more than one hours production of each resource per 24 hours, as that’s a violation of the ‘push’ rule.

Fake Attacks

One of the most valuable tactics of war is to get your enemy’s armies moving by using fake attacks. Since they won’t know what you’re sending at them, they won’t know the difference between a fake attack and a real one. Imagine if all of us send 5 fake attacks per day (spread out throughout the day). That’s a total of 175 incoming attacks they’ll be seeing, and they’ll have no idea what’s coming at them. Now toss in the large attacks already coming at them, and they’re going to be quite scared.

Scouting
侦察

Every member of this alliance should have at least 35 scouts/pathfinders/EL’s in their village by Friday. The reason for this is twofold. First, if they can’t successfully scout you, they’ll have no idea what you have or whether they have what it takes to complete a successful attack. Most of the time they won’t attack at all. Second, you can help out by scouting members of the Harem alliance at random. If the guys with the larger offensive armies don’t have to waste time scouting they can spend more time attacking.
这个联盟的成员在星期五都必须至少有35个scounts/pathfinders/EL’s在自己的村庄中。

Regular Attacks

Lastly, although it’ll take quite a bit of time I want to let everyone know they’re encouraged to send attacks of their own. Sure, it might take eight hours to get there, but when it gets there it’ll help.

Closing Remarks
结语

As always, if anyone has any questions, comments, suggestions, idea’s, etc. please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Darren Rowse

Note: This article doesn't have the right to copy from the author of Business Correspondence. I post this translation just for my own test skill.

Chapter 2 What Is A Good Business Letter?

Business letters deal with so many subjects and are written in so many different circumstances that it seems impossible to answer this question with a strict definition applicable to all letters.

Dealing with the question in a loose way, we may say, however, that a business letter is ‘good’ if the following conditions are met:

1) The letter indicates that the writer has a good grasp of his subject-matter.

2) The letter contains everything that needs to be said and nothing that needs to be omitted.

3) The letter contains no mistakes of fact.

4) The letter is written by someone who has a clear understanding of his purpose in writing the letter. In other words, the writer knows exactly what he wants to achieve by writing.

5) The presentation of the message of the letter is clear. The reader sees without difficulty what the facts are and what he should think or do. Thus it is not enough for the writer to collect all the facts of the matter: in addition he has not done his work well, the reader will ask such questions as ‘What is the point of this letter?’, ‘Can they or can’t they supply me?’ or ‘Is it all right or isn’t it?’.

6) The tone of the letter is appropriate. The letter ‘rings true’.

7) The writer has considered the needs and the business situation of the reader. There is thus a greater chance that the reader will read the letter to the end with interest.

8) The writer is as positive, helpful and constructive as circumstances allow him to be. The reader sees that his business situation has been considered by the writer and he (the reader) responds to the message of the letter as favorably as circumstances allow him to respond. We cannot always do what the reader wants but we can always show him that his side of the business has been considered.

Having studied conditions that should be met if a business letter is to be a ‘good’ letter, we may ask ‘Can a letter be unsuccessful because of things over which the writer has no control, things for which he cannot be held responsible?’. The answer is certainly ‘Yes.’. Here are some reasons:

1) If the writer’s aim is to secure acceptance of an opinion or to persuade the reader to act, the facts of the matter may be so strongly against the writer that no argument presented by him will move the reader.

2) Though the writer had made about the reader every inquiry that he was able to make, there is still a fact about the reader and his business, a fact unknown to the writer, that must be taken into account before a successful letter can be written. The writer has not got that fact and consequently his letter cannot be successful.

3) The reader has omitted, intentionally or unintentionally, to put certain information before the writer. Without that information the writer cannot write a successful letter.

4) Immediately after the writer has sent his letter the circumstances of the reader change in such a way that the letter becomes more or less inapplicable.

5) Because of circumstances unknown to the writer the reader has insufficient time in which to act on the letter.

6) There is, unforeseen by the writer, some lack of understanding on the part of the reader or some fear, bias, eccentricity or perverseness on his part of which the writer is not aware.

Exercise 2-A

Below are two versions of a reply of an insurance company to a bank’s request for details of a life assurance. The policy is to be assigned to the bank.

Compare the first version with the second and determine why the first is superior. Since the correspondence is routine correspondence between two financial organizations do you agree that a ‘complimentary’ or goodwill final paragraph is unnecessary?
